Faith of the Heart

I feel it's pretty naff (Britishism) but I like to sing along in an over the top power ballad or Team America style.

I always thought it was okay. Like some other folks I always thought 'Wherever you will go" would have been a better choice if they wanted a pop song with lyrics for the opening instead of just an instrumental.

I'm just curious what would be an "improvement?" If the idea was that they were going to have a photomontage, then to me, vocals probably are helpful, especially if they're describing the vibe the show's going after. To just have music over that leaves it kind of unclear what kind of a show it actually is. I see chalkboards and astronauts and warp speed FX, is this a technically minded show, or ... or what, here? Then, you've got these lyrics that are describing, over that, a deeply-felt person journey. Again, I'm not saying this song rocks, or anything like that. It just seems to be very serviceable and appropriate, in that light ...
Faith of the heart bothers me because it doesn't have any meaning. Faith? No thanks. And of the heart? Your heart is a pump. It doesn't have or need faith. And I get that maybe that's overly literal and picky, but it just makes me cringe a little whenever I hear that line.

I don't have any particular song in mind that would have been good - would it be too much to as to write a new one on the theme of exploration? Or why not just have a traditional musical theme instead of a song? Like I said, I don't see much point of being different just to be different.

But off the top of my head, I found the song they used in the trailer, "Wherever You Will Go" to be a better choice, just in terms of being a more enjoyable song.

I think of this as Malcolm's theme:

I agree, you're taking it way to literally.

I'd have liked to see Tasmin Archer's "Sleeping Satellite" used for the earlier seasons when the humans still seemed to be resentful of the Vulcans, leading into "Faith of the Heart" (definitely Watson's version and not Rod Stewart's) as the show got past that and more into exploration.

"I have a strong sense of confidence in the impetus my emotional state is leading me towards" just loses a bit of the poetry.
also it takes too many notes.
just like TNG reused the TMP theme, I think that ENT could have worked well with TWOK theme.

Reminds me of the Katie Melua song that has the lyric "We are 12 billion light-years from the edge. That's a guess – no-one can ever say it's true, but I know that I will always be with you." A scientist complained that it should read "We are 13.7 billion light-years from the edge of the observable universe... That's a good estimate with well-defined error bars... And with the available information... I predict that I will always be with you."

To her credit, she actually recorded the song again with those lyrics. :)

Sounds okay to me.

As someone who was mentally abused, as a child, by purveyors of religion, my perspective on that song is nevertheless a positive one. Words like 'belief', 'faith', 'heart', and 'soul' are not exclusive to religions, organized or otherwise. They don't own them. They can have very personal meanings to the individual that no one or nothing else can take away or ruin. They are not limited to what any one person or group says they are.

Just a little something to consider. :)

We all have our own responses to songs - probably one of the most subjective things there is. I don't claim mine to be any more valid than anybody else's. I do claim that it's no less valid either, though. :)

I'm rewatching ENT right now. At first, my response to the song was the same as back when it was on the air: I wish there had been a more traditional orchestral theme because I always loved those and one would work beautifully over that gorgeous montage they have at the start. At the same time, I don't think the song is bad at all. Just generic. It's perfectly fine to listen to and actually kind of sort of does fit some of the themes of the show. Watching the whole thing back to back, though, really does make it stand out more and more to the point where it starts to feel like it doesn't belong in this series. But even then, I was still generally fine with it.

Then season 3 started. I don't know if this remixed version continued in season four and I never noticed back then (on original run, I skipped most of season 3 and watched maybe half of season 4), but now that I've noticed it I really can't even fathom how offensively bad it is. I often watch and enjoy credits sequences, even ones where I don't necessarily care for the theme, and especially in the case of Star Trek. But I literally cannot watch this one. I autoskip it on every episode.

It's not quite my typical music taste and something I probably wouldn't care about at all in another context. But I must say as theme song for the show I appreciate it a lot. I especially like the lyrics actually which fit perfectly to the show's content and message.

I don't really like the new version that came with season 3 though.
