F-word used in Trek XI

Star Trek: first use of the f-word in filmed Trek?

When young Kirk is rebelling in his uncle's fancy car, he's rocking some Beastie Boys "Sabotage" which contains the line (which can be heard clearly in the scene) "I've got this fuckin' thorn in my side!"

I don't think the "colorful metaphors" of ST:IV went quite that far (although the punk on the bus give Kirk the finger) and I can't think of any other scenes where an f-bomb could be dropped without notice. Maybe in ST:III when Kirk is kicking Kruge in the face. If Kruge had held on a few seconds longer Kirk would have said "I... have... had enough... of you... you ugly... motherfucker!"

In the next Star Trek movie, should it be a character saying it?

Spock: As humans would say, fuck this.
Scotty: I can't do it captain! The engines are fucked!
Uhura: I know how to say "fuck off" in 257 languages.
Kirk: I've been told to fuck off in 257 languages.

Should our intrepid heroes swear like the space sailors they are or should "shit" continue to be the strongest curse word in human language, despite "fuck" now being canon?

Re: Star Trek: first use of the f-word in filmed Trek?

The Enterprise novel Kobayashi Maru got there first, with Archer thinking to himself, "what the fuck?" when the KM distress call came in during all sorts of weird stuff.

This sounds really cheesy, but I think the Trek way to do it would be to use it in a moment of tenderness and without vulgarity - Uhura whispers to Spock "Just fuck me", or something like that with a sweet smile, interrupting Spock's over-analyzing of an intimate situation.

As much as I love that image, that's the one thing that won't slip past censors. It's ok to say fuck in a PG-13 movie as long as you only say it once and say it in a non-sexual manner. So you can say "fuck you" but you can't say "fuck me" unless you're saying it like Gordon Ramsay (astonishment rather than arousal).

Edit: I know the f-bomb has been dropped a couple of times in the novels. One of the latest Vanguard novels had some prominent uses of it. But I'm mostly concerned with filmed Trek here.

LOL!!!! I now want to hear all these lines in the next movie! Spock delivering that line would be a throwback to star trek VI TUC "If I were human I would say 'Go to hell'." or something like that.
Scotty's line would be great with his accent cause he'd say "fooked"
And it would be a nice little comeback by uhura to kirk.

Or they could get by the censors and just say "frak." :)

That would be the end of Trek for me.

Re: Star Trek: first use of the f-word in filmed Trek?

I think this one's been done already, so I'll just merge threads, 'K?

A close friend pointed out to me back in the 80s that Kelley managed to deliver that line in at least one movie - "Are you out of your Vulcan mind?" - with an emphasis that made "Are you out of your fucking mind?" the unavoidable interpretation.

I do.

Okay, well, it's not completed, but just ask those who have read my fiction works. They get steamy. :D
I swear, if I can't make it as a computer technician, I'm just going to write erotic fiction. I did when I was a Minister. :ouch:

For those who never heard the f-word in all its glory in the theater, check 1:04 in this Youtube clip. You'll never be able to watch this scene again without hearing it! It's very clear and there's no dialog over it.

That the word could be made out—if you were waiting for it, and knew just where to listen—in a song playing on a car stereo, in a scene where the focus is on something other than the song... well, that wasn't exactly fresh news when you posted about it back in September of 2010. Bumping the thread after ten months of inactivity, only to point out the same thing again? Not really necessary and not adding anything new to the discussion, so I'll just close this.
