F-word used in Trek XI

I shouldn't really comment on this as it is common knowledge that i pretty much have a sewer for a mouth (no comments from the peanut gallery please, LOL)....but i would prefer it if there were no curses in Trek....just for the younger one's sakes.

To me having no curses makes it a more timeless show (or movie). Curses weld it to the present too much.. it's the future!

I better add though that I don't consider those lyrics to be cursing in the movie, I never would have heard them without this thread.

I've never trusted Klingons, and I never will. I'll never forgive that Klingon bitch for corrupting Trek by making Scotty curse like that in ST:VI.

I heard Scotty even gave someone the finger. Apparently you can see it missing in some shots.

I didn't know that was in there. That's gonna bother me. :(

How many times have you seen the movie and didn't even notice it? Now suddenly because you know it's there it's going to be a problem? That's just silly. It's not like Kirk said FU to the Romulans or anything, it's just a brief lyric.

Do you stop watching those Disney films where an animator snuck in a dirty word or image you probably wouldn't even notice unless someone told you about it?

Well, I am by no means going to stop watching it. It just has that element which I don't appreciate. That kind of language just doesn't belong in the kind of movie. Don't get me wrong, I have no problems hearing it or enjoying movies that have it used repeatedly, it just doesn't seem to fit with Trek.

When Spock destroys the drill and it goes to Nero shouting "SPOOOOOOOCK" the first time I saw it it sounded like "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK"

I agree with you both on this.

My grandmother said, "Profanity is used when people do not know how to communicate properly." She was a very smart lady.:techman:

I submit "Profanity is used when people are pissed off beyond common boundaries, and in that case is both effective and satisfactory. Overuse of profanity is just lame and reduce the aforementioned effects." More verbose, but more accurate in my opinion. ;)

Star Trek had been selective of words and sex because the network censors wouldn't allow it. GR was always about letting women and men be sexy during the original show. I don't know how or why Trekkers and Tekkies alike have become so puritanical in their views on sexuality, yet are always clamoring for a openly gay character. How many people have ever complained about Kirk, Spock, Picard, Riker, or Tucker being shirtless in an episode?? None.

And yet, Uhura is in her quarters wearing a bra and people lose their shit over it!

People don't mind a green orion slave girl dancing around in a revealing outfit, but lose their shit that Kirk is getting jiggy with one!!

Newsflash: Some people wear even less than their underwear when doing the nasty.

I don't find anything eggregious or unacceptable about the use of language in Star Trek. In fact, the idea of profanity is often used as a comedic moment in Trek. Some of those moments are cool and funny because they are unexpected, while others underscore the drama of the scene at hand.

Can we have a little real world perspective here? Star Trek was never meant to be Disney, nor was it ever intended for young children. TOS was promoted and advertised as an adult show. With the exception of TMP (originally), all the movies have been rated PG.

I don't think the level of outrage for this latest film is even remotely warrented, justified or reasonable.

The profanity is tame for any film, let alone a Star Trek film.

Damn straight!

I'd seen the film theatrically a number of times and never noticed it myself either. I discovered it in the open captioning on the DVD.

And, just to be clear, I consider the F-word way more serious a curse than, say, "Hell", "bullshit", "shit", or even "Goddamn" or "Jesus H. Christ!" (sorry, I'm not religious.)

If you aren't religious then why even refer to Jesus Christ which is the cornerstone of Christianity..well, at least you believe He existed or you would not have referred to Him.

You're in the wrong forum for that topic, I'm afraid, and this thread is about a specific instance of the use of a specific word (namely, that in one line of the song playing on the Corvette's radio in the movie.)

Thanks for asking.

Indeed, I do not believe in Jesus Christ but that doesn't stop me from using his (sorry, His) name as a curse.

I know, it's self-contradictory and stupid but what can you do?
