I agree that looking at the change from one Dax host to another was too good an ooportunity to miss and that exploring Ezri struggling to deal with being Ezri Dax instead of Ezri Tigan was interesting. I think people expecting her to go from a young woman early in her career to a confident and experienced officer wo integrated the Dax symbiont instanty are being unfair.
Having had the new Dax host as male would certainly have shaken things up! Worf would have been funny trying to cope with it!

I enjoyed the character of Ezri Dax. Not a huge fan of Jadzia, I felt Ezri did more and had more development in one season than Jadzia had in the previous six. That's what made her character interesting. The writers could have done so much more with the character of Jadzia but I don't think they had a vision for her character. It showed.
Nahh, Jadzia didn't change careers away from sciences when she was joined. Erza after joining Dax likely would remain a counselor.

If you had asked me after watching seasons 1-6, I would have said they should have been true to what we learned about Trills not following too closely in their previous hosts' careers. They could have made the new Dax a one- or two-episode guest star for closure to the character.
However, Ezri was a great character and had several excellent episodes about her, so I forgive the writers. I agree with BBaily861, Ezri made a more interesting character. I'm not sure if that's the writing or Farrell or what, but that's how I feel.
The new Dax as a man could have been interesting. If they were to try to introduce another woman to the cast at the same time, though, I'm not sure who it would have been. And then they would have been introducing two new characters at a time when they were frantically trying to wrap up all the story lines.

That's the beauty of Odo-Dax: kill the symbiot, but have Odo absorb the personalities. Rene Auberjonois was already adept at playing Curzon, so I think the other past hosts would not be a challenge. Then they would have been free to introduce or promote a female character. T'Rul might have made an interesting re-appearance and have more staring power than Season 7's Romulan.

This fact is punctuated by a cute little conversation between O'Brien and Nog about half way in, just before the Defiant leaves to attack the Dominion sensor array.

Different too because Sisko acknowledged that she was taking his place - remember the conversation between him and Ross about how Jadzia was more than ready to command?
I thought NdB did the best with what she was given, but the idea of bringing on a new character in the final season was perhaps conceptually flawed.
That said, Ezri's interactions with Worf are some of my favorite moments of the season, especially when she critiques his sexual prowess, calls him out for merely spouting off Klingon fortune cookies in lieu of actual dialogue, and (best of all) brutally deconstructs Klingon society.
And, hey, she was also nice to look out.

Well, it was hardly their 'idea'. Farrell handed them a shit sandwich, and they did they best they could with it. I'm personally sad we didn't get to see more of Ezri growing, but what we did get to see I am very happy with.
I suppose one problem is that a disproportionate amount of S7 eps were about Ezri, which kind of pulled some steam away from other characters, but I liked what they did with her.
Personally, I find Ezri's journey towards captain to be one of the few good things about the entire 24c Relaunch.
