Ezri Dax

NeroShrimp

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Was it a good idea to have someone replace Farrel's character in the show? Now, I understand that de Bour didn't replace Terry Farrel's character, however I am now speaking from the production point of view. Was it a good idea to have someone take over for Farrel? Or do you think we should have been without a Dax for the last season of the show?

In all honesty, I think it was a great idea to have Nicole take over the part. Without someone filling in the shoes for Jadzia, there wouldn't be that love triangle with Worf and Julian. On the other side, I do wish we could have gotten to know Ezri more than just a single season. But yes, speaking from the production point of view, I know Farrel's request to leave the show was a last-minute decision in order to join Becker. But was a season long enough to care about about someone we never saw before?

Considering Terry was playing the one character ripe for further exploration after dying, it'd have been a waste not to bring someone else in.

Ezri...thumbs up.

I like Ezri, always have, she gave a nice spin on the Trill, looking at being Joined from a new perspective whilst also bringing all of that baggage with her as well to the final season.

She was introduced and developed tastefully, yes she did get more episodes focusing on her than any of the other regulars, but she was a good character and they added new angles to the final season without stalling anyone else's development or the over-arching plot. The staff at VOY should've taken notes.

I do think one thing would've made the character a little more dynamic, if Ezri had been male--so Worf and all the others would have to face the old Dax in a totally new form. Yes that would leave the series with just one female regular, but Kira was more than enough woman for DS9.

Why should the Dax symbiont be made to suffer because of Terry? It made perfect sense to continue the character and for only having had one season, the character was given a lot to do and wasn't sidelined, at all. Overshadowed, perhaps, but not sidelined ...

I don't think it was a good idea to add Ezri...as a main cast member. Once Dax survived the show had to bring it back. However, I think they could have dealt with Dax, Worf, Julian and Sisko in an episode or two. Just have new Dax turn up for whatever reasons, do he/r thing, and move on. Then with all that free time from not having the build up Ezri the show could have done a better join with the main storylines.

One of the issues I've heard mentioned is they wanted to have another woman in the main cast and they could have done that by promoting the one of four great supporting female characters to that level rather than bringing in a completely new person.

I only wish they knew about Terry leaving sooner. Then they could have introduced a new Trill character earlier (Ezri) and she could have become involved with one of the other characters, the show the actual Trill transfer, then have the tension of the familiar Jadzia now being a part of Ezri.

I think things worked out well. I like Ezri, and think she made a great addition to the cast, and I say that as a huge fan of Jadzia.

I wasn't a particular fan of her back-story episode "Prodigal Daughter" but she was still an interesting character.

The idea of keeping Dax involved was great - more drama, right? The idea of a love triangle between Worf and Bashir - ditto.

But Ezri herself? I never really understood how she was supposed to fit in. All she seemed to do was look like a childish, babbling moron. She's supposed to be the legendary Dax, with centuries of knowledge... but she was more like a second rate Deanna Troi. What would genetically-enhanced Bashir see in her (especially after dating Serena)? What would she contribute to DS9 with her shoddy counselling skills?

Ezra should have been a male Trill, that seriously would have mixed up the show's dynamic, especially with Worf and Bashir.

:)

I agree with that.

The only thing: It would mess up the male/female dynamic with the crew overall....since Kira would be the only female lead. (Unless they introduced another non-Trill female officer - since I wouldn't have had a problem if they didn't introduce another Dax).

No, Ezri Dax should not have replaced Jadzia Dax. But nor should Jadzia Dax have had any presence on the show in the first place.

Both characters were equally useless, and neither served any meaningful story function whatsoever.

The Dax characters are DS9's example of what happens when affirmative action trumps good storytelling: that is, putting another woman on the bridge just for the sake of having another woman on the bridge, irrespective of her character having no purpose in the story.

No.

So if Dax had been carried by a male...?

Perhaps you missed this key point, but these are fictional characters. Before being deployed on the show by the writers and producers, they did not get good grades in school, prepare for the SAT, earn a good degree or go through a military academy, working their way up the ranks. They were all invented whole cloth.

In the case of Jadzia Dax I disagree. While admittedly a better actress (more experienced) than Terry Farrell could have been chosen, the character herself was interesting and did her share in moving the overall storyline along. Exploring the Trill (both individuals and species) provided many good episodes.

:)

Are there any prequel novels about the adventures of Curzon and Ben Sisko? That might be interesting. :)
