So the question is, should J.J. & Paramount release an extended edition of the film on DVD?

My side of the case: I actually wouldn't mind this personally. If there is one aspect of a critique that I actually could get with, it is that there are some things in the film that could have been expanded on a little more or would patch up a plot hole. For instance, where were Nero & Co for 25 years, and why were they just hanging around? There happens to be a scene cut from the film that shows Nero & Co being held at Rura Penthe before they escaped. J.J. says this was "too confusing for test audiences," though it seems its exclusion left some questions as well.

I was also curious about the upbringing of Kirk. Yeah, we know he got into some trouble with that car chase, but maybe the "Uncle Frank" stuff could have helped explain why he became a trouble maker? I don't know, I haven't seen those scenes but its possible there are some things that could have added to the trials and tribulations of Spock and Kirk and their upbringing that could have added a couple of more dimensions to who they are. Perhaps not as essential, IMHO, than the Rura Penthe & Potential Nero character moments.

With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed and loved this movie, and these exclusions didn't hinder my enjoyment, but it's possible there is even more to love with the film and could add a little more depth to a couple of aspects, possibly?

Your thoughts please?

I just want a toggle switch for the lens flare. Did they even film scenes that would explain plot holes?

One of the main criticisms of the movie (that I've heard) is that it moves too fast. So yes, an extended cut that goes into things with a little more detail (and shows us what happened to Nero for 25 years) would be great. I think Abrams already said there wouldn't be one, though. But he did say the scenes will probably be on the DVD.

Knowing Paramount, they will only put a few on the DVD and hang onto the rest for future special editions....

YES. PLEASE.
I realize that they wanted to make the CGI look more 'real' by including lens flares like they were really filming, but come on - it got ridiculous. Besides, don't most modern film lenses reduce flares significantly?

My biggest issue with the new set designs is the eyestrain all of the reflections and transparent dohickies would cause serious users. Can you imagine working on a transparent monitor for 8 hours a day?

My gut feeling is that the additional scenes (like the Klingon prison) would raise more questions than they would answer, so no.

I think they should have some commentary or feature that would help viewers understand the plot a bit better. Such as connecting the missing pieces from the film with the plot from the Countdown comics.

Sure. If they did a double (or triple) DVD sets with both the theatrical version and an extended cut that restores these deleted scenes, I'd love that. Doesn't mean the longer one will be better, but I certainly enjoy seeing alternate versions of favorite movies. (The Alien extended versions come to mind. Or LOTR of course...)

Extended Blu-Ray. I would hope the studio focuses it's efforts on exclusives for the superior format. This is the movie that can bring Blu-Ray to the masses, and just have a low cost DVD barebones for the rental crowd.

I picked up the Star Trek magazine today and it mentions three scenes I'd like to see:

  • Sarek on some type of hover vehicle. I know it's fairly insignificant, but I just want to see the effect and context of the scene.
  • Extended version of Kirk and Spock facing off at Kirk's disciplinary session.
  • Adolescent Kirk communicating with his mother.
They don't have to be integrated into the film. I'd just like to see them as deleted scenes or something.

Disc One: Theatrical Cut and Extended Cut, audio commentaries
Disc Two: Special Features

I would love an extended cut.

Then again I would also love a Nemesis Extended Cut, but I doubt I ever see that either.

We all know what'll happen

DVD Release Date: 1 Disk and 2 Disk Special Edition (Only a Digital Version though).
DVD + 6 Months: Ultimate Special Edition including, maybe, deleted scenes.
DVD + 12 Monts: Extreme Special Edition including Director's Cut.

I'd like a DVD where the cut scenes are integrated into the movie, but you have the option whether you want to see them or not.

I'd like an extended edition dvd or BluRay.

Kinda like the deluxe edition of Casion Royale that was released on both formats.

But please, i hope that Abrams doesnt do what Bryan Singer did for Superman Returns and leve the ebst bits out to put in a sequel that, due to shit box office, never gets made. Therefore, we lost decent scenes from Returns.

Lets hop he puts them on the release and doesnt save them for a non existant sequal.

I've never seen an extended edition I didn't like. I wish it could have been done for NEM (yeah, yeah, I know). In the case of LOTR, I much prefer the extended cuts.

I'm all for it.

Both my gf and I reacted negatively to the whole Spock/Uhura romance thing. It seemed to come out of nowhere. A little backstory to that would be nice. When Spock said that he originally didn't post Uhura on the Enterprise because he didn't want to show favoritism we assumed that he mean because she was his star pupil, not because he had the hots for her. Since my gf is a college professor, the romance between a teacher and a student....especially a Vulcan one....really rubbed her the wrong way.

I voted yes but I misunderstood. I want lots of extras, cut scenes, etc on the DVD. I don't need a new edit of the film.

IIRC, wasn't that because Rick Berman has a severe dislike for deleted scenes? Personally, I just want to see Quark's deleted cameo from Insurrection.:(

I think an extended edition might improve things, depending on what they add. Personally, I'd like to see more Kirk/Pike stuff to help explain why Pike has such faith in putting this troublemaking cadet in the position of first officer.

I voted HELLS YEAH! I want an extended edition!:techman:

That's fine with me, as long as I get a new edit! preferably in the form of a ''ULTRA PLATINUM SUPER DELUXE LIMITED EDITION ULTIMATE DIRECTORS EXTENDED CUT COLLECTOR'S EDITON DVD BOX SET''! :D
