explanation for the new look of 'E'

I'm still curious as to why MattJC did a complete turn-around over night...
He was starting to, at the very least, put up with the changes the last I knew.
Did I miss that discussion??

And I still think there's a surprise waiting for ALL of 'US" at the end of the movie that will kinda-sorta make it all feel good for 'US' Old Time Trekers.

This thread got locked. But in a nutshell, it involved stalking and asking one more question, followed by one more question, followed by one more question, and then getting pissed off that Orci wasn't at his computer 24/7 to answer everything MattJC and only MattJC asked.

Some clips:

"The man had enough time to read through the messages I sent him, but he couldn't make enough time to respond?"

"He had no good reason to ignore me."

"As far as I'm concerned, when he ignored me, I felt that I was no longer obliged to keep my word to him."

"I was trying to just get a simple answer. I didn't anything to deserve to be ignored. He was online and had plenty to answer the damn question."

Ahhhhhhhhh.....

I see......

Best to move on then...

Shame, was a pleasent change while it lasted.:)

I hope he hasn't suggested he represents the views of people here in this "conversation", I don't want the guy thinking this sort of behaviour is typical from the people here.

There will be no explanation because the TOS Enterprise never has - or rather, never will exist in this continuity.

I will be very, very disappointed if there's some kind of 'explanation' for the redesigned Enterprise. It just seems wrong. I personally think that's like saying the entire franchise never happened. Everything that happened in the past 40 years of Trek is rendered null and void. To me, THAT would be diminishing the work of Jeffries far more than a redesign based on his original work.

I think a lot of us are feeling that Abrams is shitting on the thousands and thousands of hours of fandom research that's been done over the years in an attempt to make TOS more realistic. Hundreds of novels, fanzines, volumes of Treknology books and manuals -- It's part of what makes Trek great. But I think, once the shock wears off, we can all get along.

The TOS Enterprise will always be fantastic. I am so into all the great work that has been done, from Franz Joseph through Vektor and all these other great people making it seem so real and believable. I will never in a million years be able to imagine Shatner on the Abrams Enterprise.

But, like it or not, Trek XI is a reboot. We have new actors, and we have new uniforms-- and it seems as though most of us here like them even though they obviously do not look exactly like what we saw on TOS (the actors and the uniforms). Why should the ship be different? The E is just as important as any of the other characters. I hope the new ship is an updated, even more realistic version of the ship from the 60's. I want to see blueprints, technical manuals, the works. If the same care is put into it, I will be very happy. We'll see.

At the same time, I hope that artists, modellers and writers continue imagining and researching the TOS Enterprise until the end of time. There is no reason at all why XI should make TOS any less great or "real" whatsoever.

There may actually may be a thread of plausibility that the time line is slightly askew, and is resolved by the end of the film.

Remember how the TNG Enterprise-D slightly changed in "Yesterdays Enterprise" when the Enterprise-C came through a temporal rift. This storyline could have a similar effect.

Since it appears that Nero first came back in time just before JTK was born, that may have corrupted the time line for 20/25 years before Spock comes back to repair the damage.

If you look carefully at this picture of Nero's ship moving through the rift, it appears as if his ship is being slightly altered (parts of the ship just don't line up on either side)

The problem with that is as follows - as far as we aware (and it could be different in the film) the further back they go is the time of the USS Kelvin - which shares design features with the later enterprise. If this theory was right, the Kelvin should look TOS.

That doesn't mean that some of the visuals from the later time period aren't changed because of this but that much of the enterprise design is already seen in the earlier time period.

Christ. If we're going to be having discussions like this on "excuses" for the next 6 months then I'm going to shoot myself in the face before opening day.

What was the explanation given for why Saavik looked and sounded like a completely different person between Trek II and Trek III?

Lady troubles. Obviously.
So, what, Vulcans don't have Midol?

No fucking kidding. I want to be excited to discuss this movie, but this forum is embarrassing!

I don't mind chewing the fat about such things here but let me be clearly about this - I couldn't give a fuck - all I'm interested in is an exciting movie that's worth seeing on a big screen.

The Enterprise is built on earth? who cares

Kirk's eyes are the wrong colour ? who cares

Do the characters seem real and the danger seem real ? I care.

Here's how I see it.

When you see Romeo and Juliet in one town...you don't make up excuses because in another town the actor has brown hair instead of blond and the set is slightly different. The actors are different because the guy who played Romeo in Celeveland can't play Romeo in Boston. It's not realistic. The sets look different because they're a different interpretation of the famous balcony.

Star Trek isn't about Shatner and Jefferies' Enterprise. If it was then it would've died a quiet death 39 years ago and we wouldn't have this forum to bitch on. It's about the story. The relationships between the crew. Not Shanter and Takei (which suck) but Kirk and Sulu (which is respectful).

Do you really want to see a huge satellite dish on the front of E? Really? That's a deal breaker for you? The pylons are slightly curved...that makes you want to boycot. Really.

^Exactly. Orci's given us absolutely no reason to distrust him when he claims to honor Trek lore. He says all will be explained, and unless something comes to light to make me distrust his word, I'm going to continue to give him the benefit of a doubt.

This was a little tidbit that came out earlier this year:
(and could be related to Robert Orci's comments, or just a BS rumor)

"in an alternate timeline there will be a significantly different version of the NCC-1701........."
http://screenrant.com/new-star-trek-movie-plot-details-vic-1290/

We all know how Abrams likes really surprise the audience and throw them for a curve, and I just wouldn't put anything past him: i.e. LOST

Either way - I honesty just can't wait to see this movie! :)

Dingdingdingdingding! We have a winnah!
You are exactly right! This movie is gonna rule because it's gonna be kewl to new fans and true to old fans.
Seriously! A satelite dish? C'mon!

But, if we must:
The actors are different because the guy who played Romeo in Celeveland can't play Romeo in Boston.

Though it sounds like a good place to live what with a lot of attention paid to the arts and such, something Nero does changes our beloved Celeveland into Cleveland thus proving WE are all in some alternate timeline - probably one that has a gawddawful satellite dish on the front of a STARSHIP! Ehhh!
