explanation for the new look of 'E'

i think it's pretty clear that the new look of the 'enterprise' is going to be explained within the context of the story of XI.

if you take a look at what has been established of the design principles of JJ's starfleet, everything looks pretty traditional. boxy shuttles, absolutely flat saucer on the Kelvin, as well as lots of other straight angled pieces on the hull.

when you compare all this stuff to the enterprise its pretty obvious that there's a missing link, so to speak, in the lineage of these vessels from the Kelvin to the E. you may argue that the kelvin predates the enterprise by several decades at best, but the shuttles shown in the launch bay scene in the trailer are apparently designs that exist concurrently with the E - as this scene depicts the departure of most of the cast for their postings on starships including the enterprise. also from the trailer compare the starbase seen in the background of the head-on shot of the e.

And argue all you might about J.J. Abrams' idiocy or lack of respect for the details of star trek, but I think that the production designer's past work speaks for itself. I cant remember his name but just from looking at his work it seems like he has a good feel for integrating his designs into an existing lineage. IMO, of course.

now this begs the question "if this guy is so good at designing new stuff to look like other stuff, why the heck doesn't the enterprise resemble the one i know and love?"

i think the answer to this question (and the one of the vast disparity in design choices between the kelvin and the E) has to do with the statement that XI "is about changing what we know."

obviously time travel is involved in the plot of the movie. and obviously events of the past (future?) are altered when the kelvin is destroyed and kirk's father is killed. it seems to me that the most likely explanation is that the changing of the timeline has affected the development of technology by starfleet, drastically enough that it looks like someone at R & D rediscovered the protractor, which must have been tech lost in world war three :rommie:.

although this is obviously conjecture, i think it a likely explanation for the discontinuity in design. perhaps the constitution class (if you can call the new E that ;) ) is the first ship designed with some recovered future tech?

oh i mean its certainly a possibility that they chose to just change the design. the comment in some publication about how they chose 'not to mess with what works' regarding it's design kind of shows how much the average person really doesn't notice the fine details of such things. to the average person, the ship in the trailer is the same exact one as TOS. as such its entirely possible JJ and co just chose to update the design for the new film.

i guess i am of the opinion that there's probably some explanation for the specifics of the design because it seems so strikingly different from the design of the kelvin - which tends much closer to TOS or even TMP in terms of its aesthetics. as i said before, i imagine that distinction was intentional on the part of it's designer, and not merely a lack of attention to detail or lack of a unifying design aesthetic for the federation ships in the film.

I guess the point is that the Kelvin is supposed to look older and a little less advanced than the Enterprise. That's why it looks a bit 'simpler'. I think that's also the reason they gave it its low registry starting with a zero. Just so that it becomes crystal-clear just from the look of it that we're seeing an older ship. I'm certain it'll work. :techman:

damn, you're right. occam's razor and all. still, i wouldn't be surprised if there were some significant changes to some designs over the course of the movie, due to the manipulation of the timeline.

I can think of three

First, the Enterprise as designed in the 1960s looked less advanced than the NX-01. The TOS connies were very dated in their design. This is updated while keeping the basic shape of a constitution class starship.

Second, the refit of the constitution class would have more or less required building an entirely new ship and would have taken a lot more than 18 months. With this ship, the movie upgrade is much more plausible.

This ship is built close to 20 years later than the NCC-1701 in the original TOS continuity.

OR it simply looks different this time. ;)

Exactly! It is what it is, NCC-1701. No bloody A, B, C, D or alternate universe. The old is now the new, reimagined, reinvigorated and somewhat rebooted.

The new look of the 'enterprise' is not going to be explained within the context of the story of XI....it is what it is.

Except that Bob Orci, the writer, has now repeatedly said that the difference is explained, in story.
He has even implied that the differences between the two visions of the era is a major story-point, which will be "fully resolved" by the end of the film.
.

He's always been a liar.

Okay....

Just take all this blank space in my post:

...and fill it with that long beeping sound TV shows use to cover profanity.

That about covers my reaction to your attitude on this board.

What was the explanation given for why Saavik looked and sounded like a completely different person between Trek II and Trek III?
