Expensive Trek Merchandise Purchase You Most Regret?

I've got two model kits under my bed wrapped in plastic. The Polar Lights 1/350 Enterprise-A and the 1/350 NX-01. Each cost me around $100. And I have another dozen or so unbuilt Star Trek model kits on a shelf in my closet. Probably another $200.
And all I can think is that I need the new Polar Lights 1/350 TOS Enterprise. Shoot me now.

Don't feel bad! I have roughly 1500 unbuilt model kits of various types stashed all over the house, purchased over several decades. I do want to build them all, but, hey, I'm 56 now and I can only built 1 or 2 a month....

I was very much into the whole memorabilia thing back in the day, but of recent years, I only pick up home video releases, soundtracks and a few other bits and pieces - the odd quality model, magazines etc.

I also have a large collection of 10x8's personally signed by cast members from across the franchise.

As I've grown older, I've come to realise the most important thing is to be able to watch and enjoy the shows themselves. Over the years, I've been delighted as home video technology has improved and presented Trek in ever increasing clarity.

As far as regrets go, it's probably just a niggle when I consider the small fortune I've spent continually repurchasing episodes on VHS, LaserDisc, DVD, HD-DVD and now Blu-ray!

I had a couple on Betamax too!

I can honestly say that I've never felt like I've spent too much money on any Trek merchandise--but only because I'm cheap and generally stop at $20-$25 bucks for any one item.

Ironically, quite a few of those initially inexpensive items I bought are now rare and worth quite a lot these days.

Bought that Franklin Mint phaser years ago. I forgot how much I spent, but it looked so awful I returned it immediately.

I got a lot of the franklin Mint ships, thinking they would be the only replicas available. The renegade Borg ship and Excelsior I didn't get--and they were the coolest.

They did have a big white TOS enterprise that was based directly on the FJ blueprints--and that is lovely. The primary saucer of the FJ is chunky--but that secondary hull has a lovely teardrop shape--even better than the refit to me.

I bought a UFP flag for my office at work only months before I was unexpectedly laid off. I wasn't comfortable hanging it right away at the next job, and then I had to stop working anyway. Waste of money.

...Admiral Forbin, with respect, please do not EVER not care about your treasures...they are part of this thing we share...always treasure what you collected and why...even if you are " past" the moment...

Who's "we"?

Notice how he isn't the only one who regrets a trek purchase, which is the point of this thread.

He has a right not to care for his purchases. It doesn't mean he doesn't care for Trek.

As for me, probably the DS9 tech manual I had in high school. It wasn't as nifty as the Enterprise A tech manual or the TNG one. It helps I don't buy much Trek stuff :)

I care about Trek but i cannot picture myself buying action figures, anything expect DVD's.

Same here, but I think HIjol was telling Forbin he should always care for everything he collects, which is silly.

See, I've got loads and loads of merchandise. Expensive and otherwise. Literally I have to have spent thousands - tens of thousands! - of dollars on the stuff over the last 15+ years. But for the most part? I don't regret much of it. Most of it's cool, appreciated in value, and I didn't spend outrageously on. I've got the Master Replica phaser from FC. I paid $199 for it. If I want to? I can go on e-Bay and sell it for $500-800! Easy! Same for the eFX tricorder. I got a hold of a MR Klingon Disruptor artistic proof for a bargain of $179. Decided I didn't like it much; sold it 2 years after for $350! Now it's likely worth $1000 or more, but at the time I was just glad to make a profit off of it.

Those damn Nemesis posters/banner though... god they hurt. If I'd bought them for even $50 I'd still feel dumb. Because the movie just stunk and it tanked so bad! If it had been a good one, like "First Contact" I'd love them and I'm sure they'd be worth a fortune! But no, I bought junk from "Nemesis" that is truly worth more as the tree it was made from. That's the big regret for me. That they're so lame and worthless.

If I buy an expensive thing and I can re-sell it later? OK. Fine. I may never; but knowing I can softens the blow of wasting the money, lol.

And if I buy a cheap thing, an action figure or such, and I can't make my money back? Oh well, it was a cheap buy!

But to buy high and never recover that. Ugh. Of all my Trek collectibles, frankly, it's the big stand-out stinker. I've had other bad buys, but nothing so significant.

Once paid $50 for a model of the 1701-A with lights, already built. It was great! For 20 minutes. Put it in the back seat, my sister got in and threw her purse back there - wham! Smashed it to hell. Tried to fix it but I couldn't get the damn pylons to hold. I can blame my sister though for it. :p The Nemesis junk I can only blame myself for. :(

WillsBabe I must say I'm shocked and dismayed by your throwing such things out. Why on earth not at least sell it on e-bay, even if you didn't get what you paid for it? $5 back from that $50 art item would still be something! :p

For me, it would have to be the 18-foot-long bus banner and 6x4 foot poster from "Nemesis" that I bought opening day from a local theater for something like $200+ dollars.

*Shakes head in shame...*:brickwall:

I still have both. If I thought anyone would actually want such and pay what I bought for them I'd sell, but I know that's a pipe-dream. So they'll sit in the corner with the dust for another 50 years and maybe then be worth something for being antiques. :p

I paid 70 dollars for 4 episodes (on VHS) and a figurine (I never saved or played with) in late 1997. I currently own "Redemption I" and "Reunion" for the 54 dollars I paid (in 2013) for the 4th season of TNG on DVD--that's right--I paid more for the 4 episodes (in 1997 dollars) than I did for an entire season. Worf is no longer my favorite character. I was 14 and had no use for the figurine, yet I didn't keep it as a collectible. I took it out of the package and it is rotting with the rest of my Star Trek figurines in my Mom's basement. 4 years later, I would be able to buy it on DVD; VHS was dying. I have watched the collection about 10 times in the time I have had it. Horrible. I only had 100 dollars to spend, and 70 of it went for Worf. Of course, I was young. But I will NEVER be so FRIVOLOUS AGAIN! :scream:

The Official Star Trek Fact Files. Some excellent diagrams and pics, but compared to the amazing stuff HERE, it's a washout. It could have been all that and more.
