EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEAK AT PHASE II "ORIGINS"!

I find myself wondering what it'd be like if someone dubbed R. Lee Ermey's lines from Full Metal Jacket over Pike's.

Re: QUINTO'S SPOCK SHOULD BE CONSTANTLY SHOUTING!!!

I was joking, GSchnitzer.
I honestly couldn't care less when Pike's promoted or when he met Kirk.

Why is the lighting and exposure in this scene so bad? They get the guy from Stargate, but can't find a good DoP to volunteer?

"Trek dilettantes" is an unnecessarily defensive and unseemly way to refer to fans who've followed the series for decades but don't happen to have eidetic memories devoted to trivia (and yes, I knew that the actual line was "promoted to fleet captain," too).

You don't think Captain Pike was promoted to fleet captain at the same time that Kirk took command of the Enterprise, did you?

It seemed logical enough. Pike gets kicked upstairs, Kirk replaces him.

However, separating the two events does resolve the issue nicely. Well played, Phase II. :klingon:

Of course, there's still Mendez's line about Pike and Kirk being roughly the same age, but that gets thrown out the window based on Kirk remarking in "The Deadly Years" that he was 34 years old, meaning Pike would have been roughly in his early twenties when he was captain of the Enterprise. But, that sure as heck wouldn't be the last time a flag officer didn't know how to count. See the wonderful reference work Flag Officers Don't Know Jack About Counting by Commodore Mendez and Admiral Morrow, Starfleet Institute Press, for further insight.

You don't think Captain Pike was promoted to fleet captain at the same time that Kirk took command of the Enterprise, did you? I thought Pike became a fleet captain a good decade before that and then commanded a fleet of vessels from his flagship the Enterprise. I think that makes more sense to me--while both adhering to the letter and spirit of the canon law and upsetting the conventional Trek wisdom.
Now, see, this is what I like to see. Working with what's there, rather than just saying, "I'm too kewl fer kanon, d00d." This approach takes both creativity and discipline. It's too bad the nuTrek writers weren't capable of that.

Not that it matters with Fan Films, since they're each in their own Universe, anyway, so they have more leeway. The only thing that bothers me about the scene linked here-- which is otherwise excellent-- is that the actor reminds me in no way of Captain Pike, either physically or temperamentally.

One of the best pieces I've seen from the Phase II body of work! Some nice writing and acting here. Look forward to the completed episode.

I dunno. The way Pike was about to go off on Yeoman Colt for simply doing her job certainly indicates someone who's a stickler for rules, regs, and protocol; what do you think Hunter's Pike would do when dealing with a bonehead move by a cadet?

As for physical resemblance, well, unless Ray Liotta is available, you're looking at a compromise either way.

The guy in nuTrek was a pretty good Pike. You need somebody with those piercing eyes that Jeffrey Hunter had, and an intense, but restrained, manner. The guy in the clip was spitting fury, which has contemporary realism to it, but I don't see the original Captain Pike acting that way-- I see him slowly frying you into a puddle on the deck.

Hmmm,.... well, they cancelled Law & Order, so I suppose Jeremy Sisto is now available... he shares certain 'resume' similarities to Jeffery Hunter...

I had always hoped Bruce Campbell would get a shot at it. Might have even considered working with Phase II. He supports independent film making.

They should have Campbell play Kirk for an episode. It would be so awesome the universe might explode.

Just in case anyone isn't up on current military jargon, in the U.S. Armed Forces that is what is now called a "smoke session"!

Probably ordered somebody to belay an order given by an actual officer, and is only still outside the brig because Cadet Kirk was actually right.

So, although these shots have been up on James Cawley's Facebook page for a week or so, I thought I'd drag them over here in case folks who *don't* have Facebook accounts want to see them. These shots are from our recent shoot of Davi Gerrold's "Origins" episode. Here's George Kirk (James Kirk's father) and Captain Christopher Pike:

Here's Cadet Krik again--with someone looking over his shoulder.

Why, it's Finnegan!
