Now, see, this is what I like to see. Working with what's there, rather than just saying, "I'm too kewl fer kanon, d00d." This approach takes both creativity and discipline. It's too bad the nuTrek writers weren't capable of that.You don't think Captain Pike was promoted to fleet captain at the same time that Kirk took command of the Enterprise, did you? I thought Pike became a fleet captain a good decade before that and then commanded a fleet of vessels from his flagship the Enterprise. I think that makes more sense to me--while both adhering to the letter and spirit of the canon law and upsetting the conventional Trek wisdom.
Not that it matters with Fan Films, since they're each in their own Universe, anyway, so they have more leeway. The only thing that bothers me about the scene linked here-- which is otherwise excellent-- is that the actor reminds me in no way of Captain Pike, either physically or temperamentally.
I had always hoped Bruce Campbell would get a shot at it. Might have even considered working with Phase II. He supports independent film making.
This Pike is the most realistically portrayed military commander I've seen on Trek since Sisko.
