Been following this today @ space.com, cnn, & bbc. Knew it was only a matter of time for an announcement like this, very exciting. I can't wait to see what further observations show from MRO, the Curiosity rover (who knows what secrets are in Gale Crater), & the new mission mentioned for I think 2016. Plus Oppertunity is still chugging along headed for Endurance Crater.

If this is confirmed, will we be closer to a manned mission to Mars? Can they set up a base near the water source?

salt-water eh? Well that means funding a Mars mission has been solved. Throw some 2x4's on the mission craft to build up a boardwalk and MTV will fund it and film the next season of Jersey Shore there.
