I think in Justice League Unlimited on TV he said that he intended to unmake the universe and recreate it to fit his image of perfection.
Judging from the Wiki article, it seems that it's usually been depicted as a formula that enslaves people's minds, so implicitly Darkseid sought it as a way to conquer and rule people.

Bruce Timm has said in interviews that they had to come up with their own rationale for the Anti-Life Equation for the DCAU shows since it's only hazily-defined in the original Kirby comics.
Gabriel Stacy appeared in the recent Harry Osborn mini that just finished.
His father will be in the new Ratner movie.

EDIT: Wait I'm talking about the "American Son" story in ASM. If they appeared in that new Harry starring mini-series than I dunno.
As I said Gabriel appeared in a major way wearing the American Son armor in the mini-series of the same name. Norman was again was shown in the Raft barely interested in the conflict between his two sons. Harry was able to finally disable the armor and punches out Gabriel.
Darkseid used the Anti-Life Equation in "Final Crisis" to enslave the entirety of humankind...and gained the Omega Sanction which he used against Bruce Wayne to trap him in time (not kill him as many people mistakenly thought) of which Bruce is making his way back.

^That I don't get. How does just displacing someone into the past constitute an ultimate weapon? Seems oddly gentle for Darkseid. And how effective can it be if the guy can just make his way back to the present? Heck, even if he didn't return, it seems rather counterproductive to send your enemies into the past. I mean, they could just leave their future selves a note saying, "Hey, watch out for that Darkseid guy on such-and-such a date."

I always thought that if you were forced to learn the Anti-Life Equation, you stopped caring about your life to the extent that you'd do whatever Darkseid told you. In Rock of Ages, the ALE let Darkseid conquer Earth. Something similar happened in Final Crisis. I think.
Presumably Darkseid is immune to its powers, otherwise it doesn't make much sense that he could use it. Although I'm not sure why he would be immune.
Actually in the "Return of Bruce Wayne" mini-series, still ongoing, it turns out that if Bruce manages to return to the present from his time travel exile it'll destroy the world/universe or some such. So basically when Darkseid sent him back into the past he put something in him, some kind of fail safe doomsday weapon to destroy everything even after his death. Personally I'm guessing that it's Darkseid's consciousness and this is how they'll resurrect him, but we'll see!
^ That's a similar guess that I've had as well...and Batman #702 and 703 was a behind the scenes type of deal that shows what happened to Bruce between RIP and Final Crisis and shows him figuring out Darkseid's trap. It's quite clever, at least I think so but I'm a bit biased considering my love of all things Grant. Darkseid designed it to be the ultimate Batman trap, but as ever the Dark Knight was prepared. Bruce says so himself in the narration and it ties into the Time Vanishers as well and vindicates Tim's belief that Bruce was never killed.
Good grief. That sounds ridiculous. Batman's story is supposed to be about a self-made hero battling criminals and gangsters and madmen on the streets of Gotham. All this cosmic/mythic stuff is a total mismatch. It's also just so dang convoluted, though in comics, what isn't?

It maybe ridiculous but one of the points that Morrison has tried to make with his run and he's been able to make it imo really well is that all of these types of adventures, from the aliens, the craziness of the 50's and 60's can all be valid. Batman works on so many different levels depending on what type of stories a writer can come up with...

I'm torn on Morrison's work - there are elements of it I like but there are bits that leave me completely cold such as some of the more happy clap new age stuff. Moreover, he seems to be adding a lot of 'barnacles' to the character, what with the multiple batmen, a son etc. This stuff goes in cycles and you have to wonder how long it will be before we get a writer who comes along and strips it all back down to basics. I liked Batman where he was a highly competent guy in a suit not someone who could engage in hand to hand combat with Darkseid....
Batman didn't engage in hand to hand combat....he shot him lol. We have at least two more years left of Morrison and after that DC has said Grant has a clean slate to continue on Batman as long as he wants. Oh and Christopher I meant Batman #701 and #702 are the behind the scenes issues.
Yeah my mistake...I just read 703 too and really enjoyed it. LOL
Which, to me, is the most offensive thing that could possibly be done to Batman's character.
Sorry, I should have been clearer, the last bit was a general common on the state of the character - he fights Darkseid in an issue of Superman/Batman.
