Everyone was kung fu fighting! Kung Fu Panda!

So I went to see the movie today (free!) with my family. I didn't expect a lot since Dreamworks has had major hits or misses with their animation department and I thought it was going to be a lot of lame jokes because of Jack Black and very thin on plot. I was wrong.

Gorgeous animation. I loved it. I always, ALWAYS love ancient Chinese stories like Mulan and this one was just beautiful. Very good coloring and very fluid animation. It was a great animation piece.

While the plot was thin, it had enough (though I'll critique in a second). Yes, while it was a basic black and white story, it held enough to have a good point and a good story to it. The turtle Oogway was good as well and probably my favorite character. Very wise and very funny.

What did I have a problem with?

First off, the marketing ploy for this movie. Everyone knows it is a family movie aimed at children but come on! From the previews it sounded like it was just Jack Black and a bunch of second tier actors and actresses that people vaguely heard of but no, it had:

Dustin Hoffman, Angelia Jolie, Seth Rogan, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Randall Duk Kim, and Michael Clark Duncan. Plus a few more that I probably don't know but are known around the boards.

That is a studded cast of actors and actresses. I am surprised they didn't market them as well. I was surprised at the end.

Secondly it was too short. But I understand since it is for kids. But it could have easily stretched out another fifteen, thirty minutes and still have a good story and plot plus utilize more with the voice actors and actresses, who didn't have a lot.

I liked the film a lot. Around a 3 1/2 to 4 stars personally out of 5.
