It seems to me that every year we are forced to watched the same type of movies,it can a reboot franchise or some sort of trilogy(say like the harry potter movies) and we do get or a stand alone movie(which doesn't make money)are the suits who run the studios just lazy or just thinking about the $$$$s they will make with these reboots etc?.

Not sure about Australia, but around here, no one "forces" me to watch any movie...

But, yes, I'm sure the studios are focused on the money, and if they can get a higher profit margin on reboots and sequels, then that's what they're going to primarily stick with.

According to boxofficemojo.com, eight of the top 10 highest grossing movies for 2013 in the US were sequels/reboots. However, there were two that I would consider stand-alone (Frozen and Gravity), so there are still some stand-alones that make money.

There ought to be more movies about puppies.

Movie sequels and remakes have been around since the silent era. Look at Tarzan or Zorro or The Thief of Baghdad . . . or The Thin Man, Ma & Pa Kettle, Francis the Talking Mule, etc, etc. Heck, even prequels have been around since at least 1920. Check out The Golem: How He Came Into the World, which was a prequel to 1915's hit, The Golem. . . . and the third movie in the "Golem" trilogy.

The more things change . . . .

Hollywood keeps making sequels and remakes because they sell tickets. It's as simple as that.

As others have said it all comes down to the bottom line i.e. which makes the most money. That's why we get a lot of movies with a similar theme. If a studio does try something different and it's a big hit, the others will soon follow suit.

By forced, you mean people turn out in their droves? Maybe people actually like it?

I don't really get this point. This makes it sound like 20 movies came out last year and 17 fit that mold. Sure there are a lot of movies that are sequels or remakes, but there are TON of movies that aren't. Here's a list of everything that came out in 2013. By my count there are 135 legit movies with at least $1 million budget. Plenty of viewing options.
