I'm sorta the same. I was mildly interested, now, I really interested.
I'm on the fence about this, but why make it harder for the next person who wants to come along and give a serious version a shot? While I'm not really a big fan of Dark Shadows or 21 Jump Street, it just seems like you could do your own parody concept without hurting the name of an existing concept.
Would've liked to have a seen a more serious Dark Shadows that looked like Sleepy Hollow, but with a Hammer Films vibe.
While it's taken awhile, I just don't think Burton has it anymore. He's like the Chubby Checker of directors. Instead of endless riffs on "The Twist", it's endless riffs on "quirky".
But Burton's brand of quirky just isn't quirky anymore. For me it feels like "Well they expect me to be "quirky" because that's what I've made my name in, sooooooo...."
He was "quirky" before it was cool....he made it cool. But it's gone corporate and his is safe and predictable.
Nothing works that way and no one plans or makes movies that way, is why.
There has not been a successful attempt to "seriously" revive Dark Shadows - the NBC version failed, and the WB tweeny version never got past the pilot. There's no reason for anyone in the business who owns the rights to this to think of it as some sort of perennially appealing "franchise" that needs to have its precious essence protected for the next generation.
Good point. As I said, I'm not really a fan either way, and I'm sure someone will try for another serious version within ten years or so.
I don't know. Monty Python and the Holy Grail didn't stop people from making serious Camelot movies. And Dracula is still going strong despite umpteen spoofs and parody versions. Ditto for Sherlock Holmes.

LOL! I was actually going to use Galaxy Quest as an example of coming up with a parody concept, rather than use the original.
While I enjoyed Galaxy Quest, I don't think I'd be opposed to a really good classic Trek comedy with todays humor. I think the original Trek is in that realm of concepts that you've mentioned.

That's always my question: What' s the point in remaking it? If you're going to do something new, then do something new; if you're going to do something old, do it right. This is just a lame parody movie, like the Starsky & Hutch parody that was out a few years ago.
Heh.I believe it is causing serious Drama for KB24 and RJDIOGENESI thought this was going to be a serious drama until yesterday.
No, just another disappointment-- what could have been something cool is just turning into yet another exercise in mediocrity.
It is fascinating to see just how divided the "Dark Shadows" fan base seems to be from just this trailer. From waiting a significant amount of time to actually see one, it seems to be split. With Burton involved and knowing his recent films...I'm kind of wondering why fans thought this would be a straight up "dark" take on the franchise?
Actually, I would argue we don't know it's a PARODY of Dark Shadows. We don't know that it's making fun OF Dark Shadows. All we know it's a comedic TAKE on Dark Shadows.
Because Burton just as often goes "straight up dark" (Sweeney Todd, PotA, Sleepy Hollow and, of course, Batman) as he goes for comedy (Beetlejuice, Pee Wee, etc.)?
As for me I have no real investment in this movie one way or another. My only memories of DS are my grandmother watching it as one her "stories" back in the first run. However, as mentioned before, I just don't see anything, other than Depp's makeup, that says "Tim Burton" to me. It really looks like a "generic movie comedy set in the 70s" to me.
I would argue the exact opposite, why remake something if you don't bring something new to the table? If there isn't a new spin on the material there's no need for a remake, just watch the original. Often you want to keep certain elements of some original work yet do other somethings differently, that's the only artistic justification for a remake. Otherwise you get something like the Psycho remake.
BTW I now hate the word remake (after using it 25 times in 3 sentences), reinterpretation fits much better.
Well, this just went from #1 on my "Must see on opening weekend" list to "maybe on Netflix." :-(
Especially since, at this point, we've already seen this story done straight three times now. The original tv series, the earlier feature films, the short-lived TV revival . . . and that's not counting the unaired CW pilot or the stage version!
Personally, I've seen Barnabas escape from his coffin and pine for Josette four times now. Might as well do something different this time around.
^ I'd only throw in that the revival that ran for 12 episodes was 20 years ago, not exactly franchise fatigue.
Fair enough. And chances are, the average moviegoer has never seen any of the previous iterations, let alone all of them!

There's no way for them to make money on this movie by basing it on appealing mainly to folks who care about the old show.
