Europa Report (2013) Grading and Discussion

Re: comtemporary space-set TV

^On a similar note to that. If you want to see what's left of the sets from "Mission to Mars", they were used to "dress" the entrance to the Rocket to Mars ride at Epcot.
Thanks sojourner
I had to look. photos here, here
although
if they look closely at the “Gravity Wheel” on their way to the ride, they will see the former attraction’s Horizons logo on the hub of the wheel.
here,

So I'm not so sure it is from the set of the Mission to Mars 2000 film. Yet I couldn't find it in photos from the older Horizons Epcot pavilion.

Re: "Europa" a [contemporary space adventure] in dev.

How cool is that? A film about astronauts on a mission to a planet's moon in our solar system!? We haven't seen anything like this at all since Moon (2009) or those 2000 films Mission to Mars & Red Planet.
An actual space bound & planet-landing movie! Woo hoo!

The BBC did a movie length TV one called Space Odyssey which wasn't half bad. Can't remember when they did it though.

It's actually more like a fully dramatized version of Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets, a BBC miniseries that presented a fictional near-future "Grand Tour" of the Solar System in a faux-documentary format.
I saw it too after I saw Defying Gravity. I liked the CGI a lot in it and could see that in Defying Gravity the international spacecraft Antares design which was very similar to the nuclear thermal rocket powered Pegasus spacecraft in Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets and it also reminded me of the Icarus II in the 2007 film Sunshine.
I would have liked a USA created series with a higher budget.
I'm a big fan of production design on ship-based scenes in scifi series and can appreciate the set designers and look of ships and space stations such as the early scenes in the Fantastic Four (2005) film even though they only last maybe 15 minutes on the space station.
Let's see what we'll get with Europa...

Re: "Europa" a [contemporary space adventure] in dev.

I think they will find a statue of an alien being on Europa. But I'm a big fan of Jack McDevitt.

Re: "Europa" a [contemporary space adventure] in dev.

^^ Me, too.

I'd rather see something Sense-of-Wonderish than yet another alien threat of some kind.

Re: "Europa" a [contemporary space adventure] in dev.

They'll find Thomas Dolby.

"We'll be the pirate twins again...."

update "Europa Report"

It looks like there is another film called Europa also now.
Directed by David Gidali. Produced by Avi Quijada.
here is a 1 minute trailer:

It looks like a Canadian TV movie. I'm sorry.

an update on this feature film.
The title has been changed to Europa Report and there is a teaser trailer.

It's described as "a unique blend of documentary, alternative history and science fiction thriller," and follows a contemporary mission to Jupiter's moon Europa in search of possible alien life.

The film was written by Philip Gelatt and produced by Wayfare Entertainment’s Ben Browning.

Magnolia will release the film later this year.

This likely means VOD followed by theatrical followed by disc, as is Magnet’s way.
By incorporating real world scientific research, ship design and mission planning, the film presents an authentic vision of what the next step in human exploration will look and feel like, putting the audience inside the ship with our international crew. Through the perspective of the astronauts, the audience will experience space as it truly is and marvel at the beauty, the vastness and the unknown.

Here's what Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles had to say about the project.

"Europa Report is an exceptionally smart, thrilling film that will be a revelation for space enthusiasts and science fiction fans alike. Its nuanced attention to scientific detail lends it an exciting quality that elevates it above the usual genre fare."
source cool. a sci-fi film that might actually get most of the science right.

there is a 20 second length teaser trailer here or here.
The website address at the end leads to a website for Europa Ventures, presumably the company funding the journey to Europa, the glacial moon of Jupiter
Once there, you'll find a video looping footage of the crew (including Sharlto Copley) from inside the Europa One and some shots from the outside of the ship in space. It plays on a 14-minute loop. Watch it all here (youtube link).
part of the mission statement next to the video loop:
We've recently discovered new, captivating evidence that these sub-surface oceans do exist and could support life.

We've sent six astronauts from space programs throughout the world on a three year journey to Europa to explore its oceans and confirm these findings.
if you try to click any of the buttons on the website's navigation bar, it prompts you for a username and password to login. We still haven't noticed any hints that might allow us to login and access more of the website yet,

wow. i really want to see this.
we haven't had a movie like this since 2007's Sunshine.
and the TV series Defying Gravity with the generally similar plot: 'six-year space mission through the Solar System'.
It reminds me visually of the spaceflight of 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984) and some of Mission to Mars (2000), Moon (2009) and Space Cowboys (2000). No ray guns, no space battles. Just scifi. It's been a long time since Sunshine and Moon was at the cinema.

Re: "Europa" a [contemporary space adventure] in dev.

This all sound very interesting, and in a few days I'm going to have to find the time to dig into it. Promising.

[Pedantic nitpick] Since when was Europa Jupiter's fourth satellite? ...[/Pedantic nitpick]
In terms of size, Europa is the fourth largest satellite.

:)

Re: "Europa" a [contemporary space adventure] in dev.

after skimming the 14 minute video of inside Europa One and outside the ship it really looks very realistic the production design/art direction inside.

Look at this tour of the International Space Station and it looks familiar:
International Space Station Tour 2012 (HD) ISS Tour
it is 55 minutes!
While Europa Report looks a little stylized like Moon (2009) inside the Europa One ship really reminds me of the production design on the ship Antares in Defying Gravity (2009)

1st trailer Europa Report

first trailer for the science-fiction film "Europa Report" has been launched onto the Internet, and it just might be the most realistic — and harrowing — depiction of space travel on the big screen in years.
1:50 length 1080p trailer here:

i just skimmed it. i don't want to ruin the film for me.
I'll go over a friend's house and pay for VOD in late June.

Re: "Europa" a [contemporary space adventure] in dev.

Excellent trailer. Between this, Gravity, and Elysium, I'm really excited about this year's science-fiction films.

Three somewhat serious-minded SF films in the same year, and I swear to you I'm going to actually see them in the theater. That hasn't happened since, what, 1982?

Re: "Europa" a [contemporary space adventure] in dev.

2009 wasn't so bad. Moon, District 9, Splice, and a couple of decent blockbusters which I know you hate.

Re: "Europa" a [contemporary space adventure] in dev.

Trailer looks fantastic, but I feel like we've been down this road before, on Apollo 18. Hope I'm wrong, since I'd like to see this sort of sci-fi flick, with it's ultra-realistic spin on things, take off (ha ha).

These are guesses, but I'm putting them in spoiler tags, so *warning*:

Given the documentary/video cam style, and given that the title has been changed to add the word Report, this suggests that maybe everyone died/got abducted/got stranded, and that the film is the report about the ill-fated expedition.

Re: "Europa" a [contemporary space adventure] in dev.

Much of that trailer looks like a blatant rip off of 2010 crossed with the Blair Witch Project as others have said. Is there a meaningful subtext or is it just another horror flick set in a space context?

Re: "Europa" a [contemporary space adventure] in dev.

The first minute and a half looks great. Then there's an awful lot of screaming. It's like they started out with 2001, realized it would never fly with the contemporary audience and turned it into Alien. We'll see....
