Were there any episodes that affected you either personally or otherwise in Voyager's run. I'm not talking about episodes that was great with great plot and great character, but more along the lines of episodes that you watch and it just takes you back to when you watched it the first time in that you can remember how you felt, how you reacted, or how your life was going?
I ask this question because I just saw 11:59 again tonight. It's plot reminded me a lot of DS9's Progress in that the characterization was almost exactly the same, and so was the plot. However, the theme of looking back at history and even a little hero worship was what had the impact on me. Janeway looking back at Shannon as kind of a hero only to be disappointed that she wasn't who Kathryn thought she was. However, Janeway allowed herself to change because of Shannon and it affected her life. That theme and the fact that this episode was kind of Voyager's call in to the new century had an impact on me far greater than just a TV series. I think it had more to do with the fact that it was celebrating the new Mallinium and I remember being excited for the year 2000. This episode also reminded me of a song by Robbie Williams called Mallinium which was a big hit at the time. That, and the idea of Voyager being a family really struck a chord with me.
Voyager really did know how to tug at the heart strings on occasion. Another episode that came to mind was One Small Step because that episode aired when going to Mars really was a big deal. We sent up Spirit and Opportunity around that same time, and I've always loved space exploration. The episode was damn good too, but just where I was and what was happening in my life, it seemed like the writers loved writing episodes that could really relate to me personally. I think that's a great thing too about Star Trek, not story arcs or action or blowing stuff up, but how does it affect and change ones life. These two episodes do a great job with that and I think despite all the complaints levied against Voyager, that was one of it's great strangths.
