Instead, for the 50th, let's have a brand new Episode I. A completely new series of 3, 6, or 9 movies. A new main story. Clean slate. Not a reboot. Not a reimagining. Just a brand new trilogy (or trilogy of trilogies) set in the Star Wars universe. It's a big galaxy. There are more people than just Skywalkers.

My speculation/hope is that if there is another "Episode" movie, it will have a different visual look. One of the things I wished had been different about the sequel trilogy was that the aesthetic was so similar to the OT. I want to see more fantastical, otherworldly settings. I remember looking at some of the concept art in the "Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens" book and thinking it was a shame that some of the more imaginative stuff never made it into the actual movie.

Going to go against the grain here and suggest it'll be a warm day on Hoth that Disney wants to touch anything with a complicated existing legacy such as the Skywalker saga again. Why would they, when they can branch out and create their own stuff that won't have the same fan baggage that VII, VIII and IX had?

I believe the story will continue forward post 2030, but without the crawl and #'s X, XI, and XII in the title (like the ST didn't have numbers anyway) and probably not a trilogy. A ST was the obvious starting point for Disney. Now that's it's over, I think we'll be getting to the better content.

IMO, they need to give a few movies to an "auteur" director, with less corporate meddling.

We've seen there's a lot of inequality in the Star Wars verse that doesn't appear to be directly caused by Imperial rule so maybe we have Finn and Jannah ride into various settlements and places to try to right those who have been wronged. They can get TLJ stable boy to help with their horses. Actually, maybe this should be a series instead.

They've said that they will not be doing trilogies any more, so I'm think we'll probably be getting mostly standalones or open ended series.

Building off my last post maybe for something more cinematic it would be about trying to establish the Republic? Like we always see the rise and fall of the Imperial orders but it might be interesting to see what it takes for regime change on the other end.

There are rumours that the High Republic era, which is set 400 years before the Skywalker saga, will be the setting for the next movie. It will feature a younger yoda.

It sounds like this is a new era, for sure in the new canon. MakingStarWars suggests this might also be connected to the mysterious Project Luminous, which ziro.hu expands on:

Our informant said that the new, connected multiplatform story will be set 300-400 years BEFORE the Skywalker-saga. The plot would involve a group of Jedi setting out to explore the then-unknown regions of the Galaxy (Timothy Zahn’s Outbound Flight might come into mind, which also deals with the Jedi exploring what lies outside the edges of the Galaxy). According to our informant, the Jedi would get involved in numerous adventures and conflicts with three different types of enemies, the darkest being ancient evils, Sith gods of some sort.

As far as we know, these stories would be separate, but also connected, similar to the MCU. The more one would see, the more it could be enjoyed, with the different plots culminating in the style of the Avengers movies. The main Jedi characters would also have different strengths and powers, similar to superheroes.

I get that Disney is trying to make Star Wars more like the MCU, but is that what Star Wars really needs? I don't know. This is still all rumor until it isn't.

Judging by The Mandolorian, they are trying to make it as bland and uninspired as the MCU.

For the most part, I like the MCU. Yeah, its safe. Can't deny that for a second. It's mindless. It's fairly repetitive. But at least its fun. Star Wars can be more than the Jedi vs the Sith. And I think it needs some room to breathe in that regard. But, if you just go down that path again, I can't wonder if we're just going to see the same thing. Over. And over. And over again.

The next trilogy shouldn't have Sith, it should be a Jedi vs. Jedi civil war set about a hundred years after the sequel trilogy.

And we will. What I've been seeing is the risk adverse nature of Hollywood coming out in spades.

Then eventually, I would not be surprised to see Solo’s box office become more of a norm than an outlier.

I think the next movie should be about the restored Republic either not trusting the Jedi anymore or having lost hope in the Jedi.

In a hundred years in the future, the Jedi are seen by the Restored Republic as the hubris that bought down the Galatic Republic. The hubris that lead to the nemesis of the Sith.

And a group of idealistic Jedi try to restore the Jedi Order back as the guardians of the Republic.

But, if you just go down that path again, I can't wonder if we're just going to see the same thing. Over. And over. And over again.

It's already happened, starting with the Death Star II, the majority of TFA being extremely derivative of ANH, Imperial Walkers on another white planet in TLJ, and yet more hidden identities of children/parents in TROS. It's ripping itself off like Trek was (and still is to a degree) at the turn of the century. Even discounting the repetitive storylines, they've fallen behind from a technical point of view too, sure TROS looked stunning, but so does every other blockbuster these days, the OT and PT were absolute trailblazers of technology - special effects, costumes, sets, sound you name it, you can't say that about the ST, the franchise has lost a lot of what made it so special in my opinion and it's becoming repetitive, and has been for a while. It either needs a rest, or a new creative team needs to come in and deliver something fresh for the franchise, hopefully not something set in the past either. Take things forward.

My biggest hope is that they plan out the next trilogy.
I can see Finn coming back as some sort of Jedi Master. I think Daisy Ridley won't come back as she sounds like she is done with the franchise. Luke's lightsaber will make a return for the next generation. I hope the story has nothing to do with the empire and is something completely fresh and unrelated to any resistance or rebels.

I'm still trying to get my head around them not having a planned arc for THIS trilogy !

I'd be happy to see characters from this trilogy cameo in forthcoming films, or maybe alternate main characters leading in each movie with largely new cast.

Rey's rebuilding the order could be a background thread coming to the fore at the end of the fourth trilogy. It would give a little distance from being force heavy and allow the franchise room to breathe.

Thrawn as antagonist ? Yes please !

Edit - Thrawn could be well used not as a tyrannical rebuilder of the Empire but as establishing a remnant that becomes it's own political entity alongside the Republic, possibly sometimes fractious but over time developing a diplomatic and trading relationship.

More depth to the galaxy.
