Spoilers Episode Three Sneak Peek

Or how the SNW Enterprise suddenly turns into the TOS Enterprise inside and out in only five years. That's why it makes more sense to treat SNW/DSC as reboots where events happen to be very similar but the window dressing of visual and cultural aesthetics are severely different. Do you really expect Paul Wesley's KIrk to try to seduce 19 year old Lenore Karidian just in order to get information about her dad?

I dunno...I can watch an episode of SNW followed by an episode of TOS and have zero issue accepting them as the same place or part of the same continuity. The TOS bridge looks different because it was a show made over 60 years ago.

I see it's that time again...

That’s cool. I find TOS to be extremely dated and absurd to think these shows take place in the same universe. And for anyone who feels the need to take umbrage about my opinion, as someone said above, let the gifs commence. They don’t bother me one bit.

A lot can happen in five years.

To wit: The size of the crew, in SNW, is 203. Just like in "The Cage". Sometime in between SNW and TOS, the size of the crew will more than double, to the 430 it was in TOS. They're probably gonna need a lot of refits to accomplish that. So it is entirely possible that these refits will result in the TOS look. Easy peasy.

Remember, the refits from TOS to TMP only took 18 months. And the ship changed a hell of a lot. So assuming that also happens in between SNW and TOS...what's the problem?

I would love for the ship to become more like the TOS version but I doubt it will happen. The ship would have to shrink for starters.

Well, the ‘problem’ is that the producers of SNW have no intention of changing the ship inside and out to look like the TOS version. I have ‘problem’ in quotes because it’s not actually a problem.

To be fair, we don't know what their idea final look of the ship exterior and interior will be for the last planned episode of SNW, (Or even if SNW will be cancelled before they can execute everything they may have planned - IE They expect to get one more season of SNW, but don't.)

They could take the last few minutes of a planned final episode and have the Bridge interior and ship interior look just like TOS (circa 1966-69).

Until we get to that point (which I hope won't be for a few years), we won't know.

Personally, I would LOVE if they did what I described above, but if they don't/can't no big deal either.

To me, SNW and TOS will always have both taken place in the exact same franchise Universe, and my absolute enjoyment of both won't be affected one bit.

Literally the only reason why they would do that would be for fanwank. They have completely committed to making SNW a visual reboot of TOS. Changing everything they've done right at the end to completely mimic the '60's aesthetic would be beyond stupid. Will they have Celia Rose Gooding sporting a beehive hairdo too? Will the Gorn suddenly look like guys in rubber suits? Will the Klingons look like swarthy-complected Asian stereotypes?

To me, SNW and TOS will always have both taken place in the exact same franchise Universe, and my absolute enjoyment of both won't be affected one bit.

And that's CBS's take too. So there's no reason for them to change the look of the show to mimic that '60's aesthetic.

Edit: Actually, this discussion makes me think about the upcoming crossover with LDS. It can only go one of two ways:

1. Mariner & Boimler will not mention anything about why the Enterprise and her crew look nothing like they did in TOS, affirming that this is how it 'always looked'; or

2. Mariner & Boimler will make an extreme deal out of why the Enterprise and her crew look nothing like they did in TOS, which will interest me greatly, since that would completely go against what CBS is toting.

Obviously what’s going to happen is that Q shows up, says that everything is wrong and snap his fingers and everything will be fixed.

If Mariner and Boimler start listing off all the inconsistencies between TOS and SNW, that would actually be really amusing. Since their dialogue is supposed to mirror 'fan' discourse looking from the outside-in on Star Trek.

But, as I mentioned, in-universe it would completely negate CBS’s stance that ‘it always looked this way.’ I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how it plays out.

I assume that’s what the episode is going to be about

Guessing that Mariner and Boimler will have watched in-universe dramatisations that visually resembled TOS. :-)

Maybe. I don't think the stance is really that firm, especially after all the changing regimes at CBS/Paramount.

For example, if Star Trek Legacy happens, you know Matalas and Drexler will do the classic 60s designs for any throwback scenes.

It's easier to perceive SNW as a reimaginging of the Trekverse painted by a different artist. I'm good with having both at this point.
