It's a really solid show. One of the better comedy episodes. It's one of Kirk's better relationships with a female lead in his "ladies man" phase post City on the Edge of Forever, and of course the Scotch scene is classic. Gave it an 8

This is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me.... two hot female aliens turning the entire crew into paper weights--talk about womens lib! Scotty gets one of the aliens drunk (one of the males, of course... no way would NBC allow a drunken alien woman!). Kirk lets his his mojo run wild. Bones makes someone besides Spock bitchy.
If this had been a third season episode, it would have topped the list of the season's best. As it is, it settles into the upper half of the season hall of hits.

Not one of my favorite episodes. I thought it was sort of absurd to be honest. I did like the drinking scene with Scotty but it just didn't work for me.
I read somewhere that the female yeoman that was crystallized was the only redshirt female to ever be killed on the show.
We all know that Kirk is a space hound with the ladies but c'mon using his male wiles to manipulate Kelinda is ridiculous. I know they may have been playing for more light-heartedness but it just was dumb, in my opinion.
The ending with Rojan accepting Kirk's offer to let the Federation help seemed too contrite. Good lord, Rojan had murdered a Federation crew member. Any punishment for that? I hope she didn't have family waiting for her.

Intergalactic invasion averted, crewman didn't die in vain. Rojan was in the superior position, he had to agree to stand down. It was a small price to pay in the greater scheme of things.
I really can't see this and not sure if you're being facetious. I know this is a TV show and pure fantasy but it wasn't like the girl died in a battle. Her death was so as a result of act of terrorism to be honest.
I'm not saying it didn't help the plot as it set up Rojan and the Kelvans as being in control if I were the captain and ultimately responsible for my crew members, I'd not only feel guilty but angered too. Plus I wouldn't have a short memory of the incident. If someone was to die to avert an intergalactic invasion, I would volunteer my own life over a crew member.
Agreed. I like D.C. Fontana and Jerome Bixby and their contributions to ST, but this episode was a stinker, IMHO. The only worthwhile sight was Barbara Bouchet wearing that skimpy Bill Theiss costume.
Kirk had to talk Rojan into standing down and not going through with the invasion plan. He wasn't in a position to force Rojan to do anything. Swearing vengeance on him wasn't going to accomplish that goal, and pulling a "gotcha" on him after he stood down wasn't Trek's style. Certainly Kirk would have mourned the loss of that crewman, but in the larger picture, it was reasonable to allow the killing of one crewman to go unpunished if it meant no invasion by Rojan's people, the safety of the other 429 members of his crew, and the chance to make peace with representatives of a new alien race.
