Sulu had a great moment to shine as acting Captain for a few minutes, but Scotty was in the episode also, shouldn't he have high-tailed it up to the bridge and taken command once the red alert was sounded?

The Gorn is probably one of the most recognizable "guest" aliens in the entire series. I give the episode an eight.

From the "tricorder" thread, my favorite part of this episode:

Spock: They've locked on to my tricorder!"
(throws tricorder)
BLAM!

Mine too.

A question I have about the episode.
How did they lure the Enterprise there?
I know they said it was a faked message but I'm thinking the Gorn lack the sophistication of faking a message like that.

I'm guessing the Gorn on the other end of the line claimed he had a sore throat to cover the issue of raspy hissing tones. "Bring down your technical experts, your department heads ... and a load of cough syrup."

a 9. The Gorn itself is a little less than ideal, even given the era and the budget, and some of the staging ain't perfect, but the first half of the show (except for Kirk running on tiptoe) is perfect. Viva Coon!

Agreed. :techman:

However, lost in the glare of the Gorns' fame and immortality, is the episode's primary 'adversary':

The Metron...

And such an unusual character. Notice how his body (even hands) never moves at all. Also, even his costume is unmoving, unferrered by breeze. Was it heavily starched to appear that way? The whole set-up is almost like a living embodiment of a still image. It's really interesting!

I wonder if the Metrons and the Organians know about each other. They seem similar.

yeah, bot are space asses who have no equivalent of the Prime Directive and like to fuck with us lower lifeforms, Humans, Klingons and Gorns included.

I wonder how they compare in power with Q.

Metrons, Organians & Excalbians square off in Trek's THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY (I guess you could sub Medusans for Excalbians if you want to get literal-minded.)

Every time I come to this thread, I see the '1' vote and think immediately of ssosmcin.

:guffaw:

It's a 1-off to be sure (the only person I've ever heard of who despises ARENA is Alex Winter from the BILL&TED movies, who in PREMIERE mentioned it as the alltimeworst Trek ep.)
