How would that work exactly? EA has had the exclusive rights to produce SW games since 2013, so they must have actually gone to Respawn to make it years before they actually acquired their company.
Or some quirk in the license? Not of unheard of for exclusive rights to not exactly mean exclusive.
Or not... possibly the development started before EA fell in complete love with the microtransaction model...

Also possible that Disney and Lucasfilm applied pressure to EA to do something other than the Battlefront transaction model game.
Or, more likely, the game began life as it's own IP with it's own unrelated story, designed to feature similar gameplay elements and focus. And when Respawn was purchased by EA. it was still early enough in the development cycle to scrap the previous world or whatever concept work had already been done and redevelop it into a SW game.
EA only just bought Respawn two years ago, a full two years after the game was already underway as a Star Wars title.
Speaking for myself, I think Rey is the most interesting character in the new trilogy and Rose was the only character of the Poe/Finn/Rose plotline in TLJ that had even the slightest bit of common sense.
One of those cases where it pays to actually read the article quoted, which I didn't. You're right. Though it sounds like it was subcontracted, with EA always intended to publish Respawn's game. So EA allowing Respawn to use the license, under agreement with LF. So probably not even that tricky a thing. EA just really didn't want to spend their own time on a single player experience so they outsourced to someone they thought could do a good job.
There was backlash against a black stormtrooper, Daisy Ridley was driven off social media for daring to express an opinion, and Ahmed Best contemplated suicide. Rogue One, unfortunately, may be the exception to the rule.
And yet I don't see you saying George Lucas should have written Anakin Skywalker better. There was no excuse for the way people treated Jake Lloyd, either.
Hatred of a character doesn't translate to attacking the actress with racist slurs. If people were attacking Kelly Marie Tran in that way just because of Rose Tico, then I'm sorry, they are racist and sexist.
The root of the problem is not Star Wars. It's racism and sexism, and it will exist no matter what Lucasfilm does. Kevin Feige could take over and Dave Filoni could make the next 200 SW movies, and there will still be racist and sexist people out there. This is not on Rian Johnson, J.J. Abrams, or Kathleen Kennedy to fix.
That is just the miracle of the FOX News age. Conservatives are far more likely to look for things to be offended about, "Happy Holidays" anyone? Yet Liberals are somehow tagged as the "snowflakes".
Tribalism is a problem no matter what as is stereotyping.
Actually I was disgusted with how lucas handled Jake lloyd. The poor kid clearly got thrown into such massive franchise with little support.
End of the day the abuse the actors and actresses get is terrible. And no it probably wont go away. But there are ways to minimise it or to support the actors.
They all died before the film was over, and they weren't part of the mainline saga anyway. They weren't conceived to be in the same league as the heroic survivors of the mainline saga. Apples and oranges, dude.
I'm not trying to be obtuse, but man, it still comes across as "Don't provoke them" which is terrible. There is nothing that these actors or production teams did to deserve the level of abuse received. Again, even before TFA came out there was immediate knee jerk reactions to a black stormtrooper that were highly negative.
