Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

Even if it was different and done well it would still get complaints. That's the point.

To many in fandom different=bad. And that's pretty much what I expect at this point.

Sooooo, what else can we surmise about TRoS?

What’s with Threepio? Is this going to be another tie-in to the whole series?

whether SW is DIFFERENT or the SAME isn't the issue.. it's all in execution

I disagree. Look at something like Doctor Who. That's a concept - you could run that show forever and not encounter many problems because stories can stay fresh working around the original concept. If you want the same for a film franchise, look at James Bond. Things might change a little, but the core concept stays the same. It's the situation that changes rather than the characters.

Star Wars was about the journey of Luke Skywalker. I wasn't a fan of the PT, but at least it had a set story - the fall of Anakin Skywalker - and even that didn't feel totally necessary. The main story has already been told - you can't keep repeating the formula like you could with something like James Bond.

what I'm saying is that something can be the same and be awesome. Or it can be the same and be derivative and FEEL derivative (which is how I feel about episode 7) just like it can be new and not work. There are always examples of both.

But it depends on the type of media and how whatever it is tells its story. You say, 'something can be the same and be awesome'. I just don't think that's possible with a story like Star Wars.

Not true. There are things in Disney SW that I find awesome.. if they are done well.
"Done well" is such a narrow definition. I think that if the fandom can accept that not every single SW entry is for them then it could be fine.

But, expecting every single Star Wars film or show to land right is where I think fandom is at. Which is why I think new will always be rejected on some level.

For example, I don't like the PT-at all. Can't stand it. But, there are many fans who do, who identify with Anakin Skywalker, and are happy with him being included in the SE. I personally find that unpleasant.

Same with the ST. Same with the Mandalorian (as demonstrated in the Mandalorian thread). Not everything is for everyone, even in SW. I think it would be best to stop trying to make everything fit.

I'm just saying that a general statement can't be made. It's certainly possible to make something that you've seen before and make it awesome. It's certainly possibly to make something different and have it not work.

the inverse is also true. it just depends on getting a good director and storyteller.

And for the umpteen billionth time, quality is in the eyes of the beholder!

Can we talk about what we think is going to happen in Rise of Skywalker, for fucks sake?!?

(I guess I didn’t give up.)

And good is in the eye of the beholder.

For instance, I think that ROTS is not good.

I think that TLJ is good.

I think that Episode IX will be amazing. I truly am excited to see all of this come together, including Palpatine, who annoyed me to no end in the PT. That's my excitement.

1) Lots of people's hands will be cut off.
2) The emperor will strike back.
3) The Leia character gets to ride off into the sunset via unused footage.
4) There is a hallucination of Darth Vader shown when Kylo kills him metaphorically and goes to the light side. This justifies including the breathing in the trailer.
5) Rey's parents are not nobodies at all.
6) C3PO makes a sacrifice of his eyes in order to find something.
7) Some people will be very very angry at this movie, and they will be on overwhelmingly loud minority.

I fully expect all of my questions to be answered when TRoS comes out.

All the mysteries will be solved, and everything will make sense, and we will see that they had a well though-out plan all along.

JJ admitted that there is still work being done. Come on.. this film is in desperate trouble. You don't have a huge film being done this close to the wire unless there was a problem

we're a month out from a 250 million dollar film. Picture Lock should have happened by now.
after picture lock there are other aspects to be done, but at the bare minimum picture lock

First, you are literally looking for controversy everywhere you can.
Second, the interview may have been published this week but the interview was likely done weeks ago.
Third, you have no idea where they are in the process today.
Fourth, no where in the interview does he suggest they don’t have picture lock.
Fifth, can you let people get excited about something without injecting doom and gloom into the situation? It’s really tiresome.
Sixth, you are literally looking for controversy everywhere you can.
