Episode Eight Pre-Release Thread

Okay, let me explain my thinking here:

The first thing that made me think Tarkin was the blue-grey eyes, and the set of (what's left of) his mouth and jaw. The shape of the (relatively) undamaged right ear - identical to Tarkin's. Same thin lips with prominent indent above. No more sunken cheeks, but that's because one cheek no longer exists and the skin from the other has been pulled tight to cover an old wound.

This guy is clearly old as hell, and has been through one doozy of an explosion/fire. A disaster so bad post-Mustafar Anakin still looks like a teen idol next to him. And yet... he doesn't look like any part of his facial damage comes from excessive Dark Side use. If he's an alien, he is (or was) a completely human-looking one. He claims to have personally witnessed the fall of the Republic and rise/fall of the Empire. In deleted dialogue talking to Kylo Ren, he speaks as someone who knew both Palpatine and Vader very well. He loves planet-destroying superweapons, the bigger the better (the Death Star was Tarkin's baby). He's whipped the First Order into one hell of an efficient military machine, while showing none of the ego and overconfidence that sank Palpatine; only at the end did Tarkin get cocky. Snoke rejects clone soldiers in favor of a wide range of recruits trained from birth; Tarkin was as old-school military as they come.

You're totally right, Reverend, about Tarkin not being a Force user. But so far... we haven't seen Snoke use the Force any. "There's a disturbance in the Force"* - not "I've felt a disturbance in the Force." "It's time to complete Kylo Ren's training" - not "It's time for me to complete Kylo Ren's training." You don't really need Force powers yourself to teach a young Vader-wannabe (who's already got the powers, fighting ability and skill set from training with Luke) about Sith history/philosophy, not to mention personal anecdotes about dear ol' Granddad and his boss. And from what we've seen of Kylo Ren himself, Snoke is a very poor teacher if he himself is Sith. Anakin on Mustafar, a Sith for only a day, was far more focused and disciplined. But in a galaxy with no Jedi left, who needs a Dark-Side-using protege to be that great anyway? He's only got to be good enough to beat and kill an old, despairing Luke.

Until that girl shows up out of nowhere, that is...

* Of course, that then leads to the question of how did Snoke know of the disturbance if he didn't feel it himself. I don't as yet have an answer. It is just a theory, after all.

The blue eyes must be a hint at Snokes true identity

No 'in-universe' height given, but the chief of creature and droid effects on TFA said he is 'seven something' feet tall.

Snoke clearly felt Rey's "awakening", and all but says as much when he asks Kylo if he's felt it as well. The guy is definitely a Force user.

For all we know he's two foot tall and that chair is a cybernetic life-support apparatus, from which he may never stand. At this point there's really not a lot of point in arguing over details when there are none to be had.

Personally, I'm rather fond of the notion that that hologram was 1:1 scale. So often in fantasy and sci-fi giants are portrayed as lumbering brutes. It'd be a fun inversion to have a giant who's all about guile, cunning and subtly. The anti-Yoda, in more ways that one.

And a good one too.

This is England '86/'88
The Fades
Glue
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
The Last Panthers

Might put a kibosh on his development of the BBC's His Dark Materials TV adaptation though. Which would be a shame

Hugo - a good step forward

That would be interesting, but I would prefer he be closer to human sized, so we can get a big lightsaber duel between him and Luke. That would be kind of weird if he was as big as his hologram in TFA.

Snoke has no reason to use a lightsaber, regardless of his height, because he's not a Sith.

Ben/Kylo uses one purely as a homage to his grandfather.

If Yoda can fight Sidious and Dooku then Luke can fight a giant Snoke. ;)

When did they reveal that Snoke doesn't use a lightsaber? Or even that he's not some kind of a Sith? If he's a dark side force user of any type, and someone had to teach Kylo darkside moves and I'm betting it was Snoke, he probably has a lightsaber. Heck, someone had to teach Kylo how to make a darkside lightsaber, since a red lightsaber only comes from corrupting another person's kyber crystal and I doubt Ben Skywalker did that by chance.

Plus, I seriously doubt Kylo only uses a lightsaber because his grandfather did. there is no evidence that he only uses the weapon because Vader did.

I could be wrong, but I believe it has been confirmed that Snoke isn't Sith, he is just a dark side user.

According to the TFA Visual Guide, Ben Solo was not his first apprentice.

@kirk55555 Following TFA's release, Pablo Hidalgo clarified on his official Twitter account that Snoke and Kylo Ren are not members of the Sith Order, which, like the Jedi Knights, is a very specific sect of Force users who specialize in tapping into the Dark Side.

It's also been established that the use of a lightsaber is something that, by and large, is specific to both the Jedi Order and the Sith, with the latter being unable to physically construct their own sabers without having to first steal the Kyber Crystals from Jedi-constructed sabers and "bleed" them.

It hasn't been explicitly established that Snoke doesn't have a lightsaber, but there's also no reason to believe that he would given what we know about the Sith, their relationship to the lightsaber, and the fact that we know he's not a member of that specific order.

Well, we've seen a bunch of non Sith bad guys have lightsabers in the past, and even in canon Grevious liked them. I think its a bit presumptive to assume snoke won't have one, and especially to assume that Kylo only uses one because of his grandfather. At a bare minimum, as a group that seems to be in opposition to Luke Skywalker (based on what we know of Kylo betraying Luke and then just being part ofd the dark side in general), it would make sense for Snoke/Kylo to have lightsabers since, while not technically Sith, they'd use lightsabers or similar weapons to fight Jedi.

So, Snoke might not have a lightsaber, although I'd be legitimately shocked if he doesn't because a Snoke/Luke saber fight not happening is pretty unlikely in my opinion. But I definitely bet that Kylo isn't specifically using a lightsaber because of his grandfather.

Oh yeah, I forgot that we did see Yoda fighting regular people a few times.

There's also a slight chance we might see Rey fighting multiple lightsaber wielding enemies as some point during TLJ. In the behind the scene video we saw Daisy Ridley training for a fight against multiple opponents with what could be lightsabers, and if they are then the Knights of Ren would be a pretty good possibility for those opponents.
