Episode Eight Pre-Release Thread

Maybe Luke gave his green sabre to Ben Solo, who later modified it to be his red cross blade one. Either that, or the artists are simply using a single model for the light sabre.

That doesn't really track. Finding the crystal "meant" for them and building their own lightsaber is a key part of becoming a Jedi. It's not just a piece of technology, it's both a reflection and an extension of the person who made it. That Kylo's is cracked and *barely* stable is not an arbitrary thing.

More likely is that Luke cast his aside when he went into exile because he felt like he had no business claiming to be a Jedi anymore.

That or he still has it and for whatever reason they're not showing it in the promotional material yet.

I'm out of touch with the Disney cartoon series, so I'm guessing this is mentioned in those. But if you stick with the movies, we rarely see Jedi actually being trained, and those we do already have their sabres:

TPM - Obi-Wan (already has LS)
AOTC - Anakin (already has LS)
ANH - Luke (gets Anakin's LS from Obi-Wan)
ROTJ - Luke (only reference to building his own LS)
TFA - Rey (gets Anakin's LS)
TLJ - Rey (is training with Anakin's LS)

It's pretty well established in TCW, Rebels and the Ahsoka novel. Lightsabers are built by Jedi before they're even assigned as padawans. There's a trail, a test of spirit, it's a whole thing. Incidentally, all of this was Lucas's idea. This is how he pictured it working.

Obviously this never came up in the movies because it was never relevant to the story. Plus, in the case of Luke and Rey, it's not like they had much of a choice but to use a hand-me-down, at least in the short term. Apparently Luke did find his own crystal eventually and built his own sabre. It's a safe bet that Rey may also do so eventually, depending on how her story pans out.

Or it was lost in the attack on the Temple, and is either still there (A dangerous quest!) or Snoke has it.

I started to get interested. I got a lump in my throat when Carrie appeared. Then Adam Driver popped up.

No...
Lots of interesting bits and pieces there. I'm amazed how many of the aliens and creatures appear to be physical puppets and makeup. I'm so used all of that stuff being CGI, that it took me a minute to realize that since this appeared to all be raw footage, except the shot of the CGI critter on the computer screen, that meant they were physical things that were actually there while they filmed.

The clip actually got me excited for the film again, and seeing where Rey is going, as well as Finn's undercover mission.

When do I get to cue the fan rage?

Carrie is suppressing the fan rage for now. Her presence will likely keep it away until the film comes out.

I've made a point these last few years to ignore as much of the "fan rage" as humanly possible (not just Star Wars, but any fandoms I cross paths with.) Seen that little merry-go-round one too many times to really care what the same old obnoxious gobshites think.
It always dies down, if not utterly forgotten 5 mins after the fact anyway. Very rarely does it amount to anything in the long run.

just read The Plot to Star Wars EP VIII
AND Literally I'm speechless...

can't and won't say more for those who want to be surprised. no good or bad comments either way.

Its up for those who want to know, to go look.

Both Anakin and Obi-Wan make new Lightsabers at some point before RotS, combine that with Luke and Rey using a pre-made saber and I can do entirely without the whole newfangled Kybur crystal of destiny crap. As far as the movies have shown, Lightsabers are just a machine/weapon associated with the Jedi.

I assume by "newfangled" what you really mean is "existed prominently in the early drafts of the original movie but was later de-emphasised because the Death Star plans made for a more easily understood McGuffin."
Easy mistake to make. ;)

Like it or not, the lore surrounding Kyber Crystals, Jedi, and the Lightsaber as introduced in The Clone Wars is Canon and isn't going anywhere, and still affects all parts of said Canon regardless of whether or not tangible evidence of it exists in all Canon materials.

Crystal colour is determined at harvesting, that is really the only thing that has changed.

You can use other peoples lightsabers and crystals, its just your personal crystal just has a deeper connection in the force.

I doubt all those temple guards harvested yellow crystals.

Oh, and Red crystals are Jedi crystals perverted by the dark side.

I get the feeling Kyber Crystals will come up in Episode Eight or Nine as a follow on to the mentions of it in Rogue One. Supposedly Snoke's got a huge crystal on his ring.

They'll also probably get a mention once Rey builds her own lightsaber. (I might be wrong about this ever happening, but I really can't believe it won't at some point. In-universe it's part of the training, and out-of-universe, hey, that's a brand new toy to sell to people!)

Given the Blade Builder line that relies as much on customization as it does familiar saber hilts, that is not a guarantee any more.

I will, however, buy a toy of that.
