Episode Eight Pre-Release Thread

I just saw an article on CBR that included Maz Kanata in the cast list and said Hux's first name is Armitage. I haven't seen this information before, but it's just mentioned casually in the cast list at the end of the article, so I'm assuming it must have been revealed somewhere else and I missed it.

Hux's first name was established in one of Chuck Wendig's Aftermath novels, IIRC. Or at least that's where the name made its first appearance in-universe.

We need Maz, if for no other reason than to explain just how, exactly, Anakin's lightsaber was recovered in Cloud City after being chopped off of Luke.

I'm not normally one that needs every little plot detail explained, but the matter of Anakin's lightsaber falling down an endless shaft, only to mysteriously turn up in a box in the basement of Maz's bar some three decades later is going to require an explanation. Hopefully one that is both entertaining and mildly plausible.

The old version was that it was found I the rubbish after being pulled out of one of the vents by Ugnaughts. I that version, Lord Vader retrieved it (after killing the head Ugnaught), but the Emperor wanted it (and Luke's hand) as a trophy.

The new version would likely at least be partly the same for how it was found. But after that it could have been bought as salvage and moved from place to place, eventually being sold to Maz for one reason or another since she is a collector and prized artifacts might get one special deals or at least one's tab waved.

Well they haven't said how in any of the extended material, so either it hasn't been written yet, or they'll going to talk about it in the movies.

I don't need it to be any kind a big plot point, but an explanation somewhere would be nice.

I've never found unsolved mysteries in movies to be particularly fun or entertaining. More like annoying, really
It isn't important to the story being told. Luke lost it, Maz found it (probably with a few steps in between) by the will of the Force, because we needed a lightsaber for our new force-sensitive hero to wield and why not make it Luke's & Anakin's? .
Sorry, Luke's lightsaber is a "story for another time." No pay off would be extremely frustrating. I'm usually ok filling in the gaps, but that one was called attention to in the film. It's a Chekhov's Gun now, um lightsaber.
It really isn't. "Chekhov's gun" has nothing to do with elaborating on how the gun got above the fireplace.

The lightsaber is here now. Unless the backstory of its travels is relevant in some way to the immediate story of these characters then it has no place in a movie. They have the choice to do that, to make its history tie into the current goings-on between the Republic and the First Order, or introduce a character for whom that is background, but it is far from necessary and more likely the sort of meandering exposition that the OT very intentionally eschewed to all of our benefit.

I started to get interested. I got a lump in my throat when Carrie appeared. Then Adam Driver popped up.

No...

The behind-the-scenes featurette for The Force Awakens dampened my concerns about the production. The same featurette for The Last Jedi fills me with excitement, and sadness. Seeing and hearing Carrie Fisher left my my eyes watering.

Is this all we're going to get from D23? No new trailer?

I really wasn't expecting another one so soon. Remember, we're still a good five months out and they need to pace themselves with the marketing.
IIRC the trailers for Rogue One dropped in April, August and October, with the BtS reel in May for celebration. Given that the Last Jedi teaser was already at celebration this year, it's a fair bet we won't see anything else until at least late August, if not September or October.

ETA: ...and here's all the new teaser posters they've posted thus far: -

Curious that both Luke and Rey are shown holding Anakin's old lightsaber. Could there be a story reason why he no longer has his green blade, or am I reading too much into this?
BTW, it's great seeing Rey in a hooded cloak. Something about that makes the whole Jedi thing feel "official". ;)

Maybe Luke gave his green sabre to Ben Solo, who later modified it to be his red cross blade one. Either that, or the artists are simply using a single model for the light sabre.

Although the cloak really isn't red (just the tint for the posters), I can't help but think Rey has become a Handmaid.
