Spoilers Episode 9 Trailer

They're making a Lower Decks movie!!!!

...sort of.

Next week's episode, titled "Crisis Point", will feature our lower deckers making a holo-movie on the holodeck! Looks like a lot of fun! I'm sure there will be a lot of meta-refs on this one! Holy :censored:!!

Mariner repurposes Boimler’s holodeck program to cast herself as the villain in a 'Lower Decks'-style movie.

Seems like Da Vinci is gonna appear - voiced by Rhys-Davies?

JJ Abrams is directing the episode?

?? I don't think so, at least there's no indication of him on the docket after a cursory Google search in all the right places. LD hasn't really used any big-name directors, usually just using a three-person rotation of the same in-house directors (Bob Suarez, director of Temporal Edict and Terminal Provocations, is up next).

A massive box office blockbuster film director like Abrams is unaffordable by CBS All Access, and even if we assume he does it for free or works for scale, a 25-minute animated episode is not his wheelhouse, and he might not be suitable for this kind of programming (he has never directed any animation before, and has only done one half-hour comedy - a 2007 episode of The Office for sweeps).

His direction of that one episode of The Office (Cocktails, a good episode, btw, but one filled to the brim with melodrama and changing the course of the show's narrative), does bring to mind that any direction of an LD episode (or, more likely, Discovery or Picard or any of the other upcoming stuff) will be heavily, heavily promoted, like six months in advance, because he has plenty of fans for making Trek a blockbuster name, for a time, and returning it from the wilderness.

It does make me wonder why Mariner uses the term "movie" for what appears to be an interactive holodeck play for her and her friends.

I suppose that's the natural progression of entertainment. Interactive TV is already here! I think it was Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt that did a choose-your-own-adventure type of special... Tina Fey and her crew even referred to it as "The Movie" while they were making it. And that's just one example..there have been several other high-profile interactive releases over the last couple of years. So I suppose the holodeck is just a continuation of that theme, where you can not only choose your own path, but also interact with the characters on the "screen".

I noticed the "movie" was full of lens flares. That should make this thread go on longer than the Brian Brophy one.

The same reason people still say 'rewind' even though most of us don't use VHS/Cassette tapes anymore.
Or the floppy disk is still the universal save icon.
Or any other number of things that don't make sense anymore but we still say/use.

I have no issue with it, it's just that movies still exist as entertainment (they watch them in Enterprise and Voyager), but this is the first time a holoprogram or holonovel has been referred to as a movie (holo-movie?).

Merged both threads discussing the trailer for next week's episode, because we don't need two of those and because I don't like clickbaity thread titles either. :p

EDIT: Regarding the trailer, it clears up the mystery from a couple of weeks ago whether that was indeed Mariner in that alien bridge's captain's chair. Told you so, @Charles Phipps. ;)
