Environmental disaster unfolding in New Zealand

Containers from the stricken cargo ship Rena are washing up on a nearby island, with the captain appearing in court this morning.

The Rena, a 47,000 tonne cargo ship, grounded on the Astrolabe reef off Tauranga last Wednesday. It had been leaking oil into the ocean, and was listing at up to 19 degrees to starboard.

While there was no sign of new oil leakage today, fuel oil was last night gushing from the boat, with up to 350 tonnes so far leaking into the ocean.

MNZ said "significantly more oil" would wash ashore in Papamoa today.

Oil from the ship was spreading faster than expected, leaving dead animals in its wake and prompting [Environment Minister Nick] Smith to label the crisis as the country's "worst maritime environmental disaster".

At least 53 dead birds have been found and 17 treated by the National Oiled Wildlife Response team.
However it could be up to two days before operations to salvage the remaining oil in the Rena resume, Smith said.
Smith said the stormy conditions would help to break up the oil that had already leaked into the sea, but it was also hampering attempts to salvage the remaining 1300-1400 tonnes.

Since the crew was evacuated from the ship yesterday it had not been possible to measure the amount of oil remaining in the ship's tanks.
There goes our clean green image...

Err dude, we don't have a clear green image, it's all in our heads. We dump all our shit in the sea in our major coastal cities, we all trawl around in 3 and 4 litre cars and Auckland was recently exposed as more polluted than Tokoyo. There's rubbish everywhere and pollution is there if you look.

'She'll be right' - not this time.

We're just full of shit my friend, an image thrown out there to catch some tourist dollars - we can't even sit in the sun for 10 minutes without getting cancer.

The oil thing is down to the NZ authorities I'm afraid, no plan or equipment to deal with this, a ship allowed into our coastal waters despite NZ powers that be having concerns about it's sea worthiness and no command and control on the ground to sort this out. Just like Pike River and just like the earthquake.

Face it, we're little more than a third world country with a couple of nice views and a lot of very stupid people.

Well, we did have a clean green image, right up until you just gave away our little secret...

Great, now there's a massive crack running down the hull. She's gonna break in two in the next 24 hours, just know it.

Well now that your secrets out..

To me this is proof that a well equipped RNZ Navy would have been an asset in situations such as this one..military organization often is needed during such problems.. (US Coast Guard does very well unless overwhelmed).

What's the State of the Royal New Zealand navy?

Oh dear Lord, The Kiwi's have 2 combat vessels, and 4 patrol boats...

http://www.navy.mil.nz/visit-the-fleet/

That's not even enough to protect the fishing areas.. or organize a proper response to this disaster..

We're the biggest confidence trick on the planet, we're racists, wife beaters, broke and too stupid to listen to the common sense many of the immigrants who come here, speak.

The oil thing is endemic of a kiwi managed mess, just like Christchurch were there are still people living in tents after the quakes.

We're a disgrace.

But you’ve got some nice-looking sheep.

Preach, brother! :bolian:

On the plus side, at least that lovely John Key will be re-elected and throw out that useless MMP voting system, so we never have to hear from any dissenting opinions again. :shifty:

A second term National government scares the pants off me, but they'll definitely get in. Labour have done nothing to attract interest, Phil Goff is a wet cloth and the country is too damn apathetic to really take an interest in politics anyway! :D

I've never liked MMP, especially after Winston Peters held the nation to ransom those years ago until he decided which party he would go for. Despite over 82% of the country voting for the two major parties, it took ages for a government to form that year.

It still takes ages for anything to get done; the smaller parties don't have the sway in parliament they should have. Might as well not have them there.

I don't see how dispensing MMP will give the minor parties any more sway.

While the system isn't perfect, it's better than the alternative at this stage, and considering the state of both major parties I shudder at the thought of a return to the two party system.

Let's not judge it too harshly on the basis of Winston's indecisiveness either. C'mon, it's Winston, in the end it's always been about number 1 with him anyway.

The end of ACT and NZ First are no big loss. Though it's kinda sad how Brash's attempt to capture the yoof vote drowned out what was actually a sensible policy idea. Now if only we can bin that leech Dunne too.

Totally agree on the apathy part, considering the year the country's had I can hardly blame them.

Though we in the media are just as much to blame for being taken in by Key's routine. It may be a business, but celebrity endorsements are pretty lazy. :(

Are NZ politics inoffensive enough to stay in Misc?

You know one of those guys is a Kiwi, right?

We miss ya, Fred. But it is the great Kiwi dream to move to Oz and start earning money, so Que Sera.

Sorry, he has been in Australia for almost 40 years. It's just a weird knee-jerk reaction we New Zealanders have whenever one of us makes it elsewhere. :borg:
