Enterprise vs Trek 2009

Overgeeked

Captain
Captain
I'm rewatching Season 4 of Enterprise, not everyone's favorite show, I'm sure, but I'm noticing something wonderful: compared to the writing of Trek 2009, Enterprise is spectacular.

I'm not talking about the temporal cold war or that, just the fourth season. The Vulcan stuff, the Andorian and Tellarite co-op in the Babel arc. The Reeves-Stevens and other writers who worked on that season put out some great stuff. Far fewer plot holes in the entire season than the two hours of Trek 2009.

It's got all the adventure of TOS, some of the moralizing of TNG, none of the religion of DS9, but the politics (in places), and the sense of wonder of Voyager. Pulp adventure space opera in best sense.

Damn shame that was canceled.

Yeah, Enterprise was vastly under rated by people and was much more consistent with canon than just about any of the other shows (despite what people claimed)

As good as it was though, I wouldn't really say that Star Trek's plot was all that bad. It did have a couple of holes but most shows/movies do.

Enterprise was excellent. Those 3 ep story arcs are like a feast! Vastly underrated, I agree completely. But I don't say that the movie was poor writing at all, it was a wonderful prequel with loads of potential for the next film.

Admittedly, I'd almost completely tuned out by the fourth season.

I did watch the much lauded (at least by Enterprise fans), nonsensically titled mirror universe duology though. If that's an example of the fourth season's alleged "spectacular" writing, Trek (09) wins. Epically.

Are you seriously judging it based off a mirror universe episode? In a Mirror Darkly was cheesy fun, but I don't think too many people consider it (nor any mirror universe episode) spectacularly written. :p

The best part of the MU IMHO was the opening sequences. They are intense. After that it was very cartoonish and not in a good way.

I see a joining of threads in the future..

But Brett, there is some great stuff in ENT.

Yeah, you're all wrong. This movie owns Enterprise handily and with no reservations on my part.

No, YOURE wrong. Enterprise owns this movie handily ;)

It's the difference between a competent and unremarkable ability to find and fill continuity gaps and a stunning, whirlwind display of infectious enthusiasm and instantly memorable characters.

There's not a one character on Enterprise half as interesting as any of the leads were after three lines in this movie.

I think the what happened with most people for ENT will happen for the Star Trek XI.

When I first saw ENT I hated it. I refused to watch it. Later I started to get a little interested and started to watch it. Shortly after that it was canceled. I kept watching as the show got a little weirder towards the end but I fully expected this to be the end of trek and I pressed on.

I own all of ENT now. I don't like every episode in fact I think some down right suck.

I think in a way it opened my mind a bit for this new movie. I was more ready to accept change.

I loved the new movie and I think alot of people that dont like it now will sooner or later when it grows on them a little.

Why not? Only thing different would be the characters, and let's face it, that can only be a good thing.
Because its not supposed to be taken seriously or in any way relate to the show proper.

Well, to put it simply, I disagree :techman:

Yes, there is! Charles Anthony is THE sh#t! :techman:
(though compared to nuKirk, nuSpock, nUhura and nuScotty, other ENT characters, with partial exception of T'Pol, are just PLAIN sh#t).

So, you'd judge the later seasons of DS9 by watching 'The Emperor's New Cloak'..? To choose a very a-typical episode of a series as your basis to form an opinion on is just plain weird dude...

I want Shran to get sucked into a black hole and be in Star Trek XII. I would die from happiness.

Not having bee able to get through the first season, is it possible to just watch the fourth and get what's going on?

Coincidentally, both in real-life and in "Star Trek" continuity, "Star Trek XI" chronologically follows the events in the last season of "Enterprise," and the entire "Enterprise" series remains unchanged as a part of history and continuity for all the characters in "Star Trek XI."

This movie isn't a re-boot. It is simply the logical continuation of the "Enterprise" series, but 100 years later.

I began watching season 1 on tv, shown very late at night here. I was bored, I was disappointed, I stopped watching. Eventually I downloaded it and watched it all the way through on my time.. [I have bought ALL MY TREK when it is available in the regular priced dvd's] and, though some first season eps are slow I was quite wrong to dismiss it. In season 3 onwards I was absolutely pumped about this show, the characters, the drama, the story lines, the politics.. it is fantastic stuff. I would say the xindi arc actually has more in common with XI than any other part of any other series. It's modern and edgy and often stunning to look at. It moves fast (omg much faster than season 1!) It's intrigueing and it has surprises. A variety of characters, not just the crew, really got to me.

I bought all four seasons on dvd and have watched it through 3 times now. If you aren't able to put the time in for the first two seasons you can start with season 3, though please watch the season 2 finale. You will do fine not having seen the first two seasons, the direction change is quite marked.

Bolded bit for relevance to this forum, LOL. Anyone else agree?
