Enterprise voted by fans as most underrated Trek show

Yep. I agree. I used to think of it as a guilty pleasure, until I started watching 24th century Trek. Then I realized just how great ENT was. TNG, DS9 & VOY rely heavily on technology. Whereas I felt like ENT went back to the roots of Trek--characters, situations, etc without all the technobabble.

Definitely underrated. New people are discovering the show now, though.

I stopped by StarTrek.com and noticed that. Nice one.

There's excellent, good and just plain average shows in all the series.

I generally skip fewer episodes of ENT. Whether that's simply because I'm familiar with the others, having seen them many times before. Or just find the lows in this show, not so low... I don't know.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I caught the last half hour of a DS9 episode yesterday, and while it was decent in its own right, I found it far too straight-laced and aloof. I found it quite jarring and took me out of the story for a moment.

The conversations between the characters (at that point in time) were cold and dare I say it, unrealistic.

And as you said, they relied too much on tech, wheras on the good ol' NX-01 there are times when you have to get your hands dirty in order to get things done.

S4 is underrated, that's for sure. The other seasons got the ratings they deserved.

If we're defining "underrated" literally, that is.

No. DS9 relied the least on technology because of the heavy reliance on politics and war for plotlines. TNG, VOY and ENT all focused more on stories where technobabble was used to solve the problem, something that was much rarer than DS9. ENT started to rely less on technobabble in S3, which was just a poor imitation of DS9's war plotline and not really an improvement.

ENT's technology should have been less of a focus than it was, given the time period, and space politics and commerce should have been more important/

I'll have to agree that ENT relied less on techno-babble than any other modern ST series. I don't think it is as underrated as it was a few years ago. More people are giving it a chance and finding out they like it after all. It is also the only series to not have a superman or supercure to solve problems. TNG had Spock's pinch and mind meld. TNG had Data and the transporter to fix everything. DS9 had a changling. Voy had the Dr. and an ex-Borg. While ENT had Phlox and T'Pol they were never used as "fix-all" aliens. The Enterprise crew had to find real solutions, or fail.

That may be the best thing about season 3. In any other ST series the Xindi problem would have been solved with a transporter or a superalien.

I can agree with that. ENT felt much more intimate.

I think I can somewhat agree on the first two seasons of Trek, but I respectfully disagree about DS9 not heavily relying on technology. I will give you that they had some great political plotlines, but there were episodes aplenty where the technology was a prevalent part of the storyline.

I think for me it's less about the technobabble (as annoying as it is) than it is about how heavily 24th century Trek relies on it. In an episode of DS9 something gets into the station's main computer, and they don't know how to deal with it (other than evacuating the station). Granted, I can understand that a species with such advanced technology would come to rely on it for day-to-day living, but what got me was the fact that there was no back-up whatsoever. That seemed ridiculous to me.

With ENT, it was more raw. When something went wrong, it wasn't going to be solved with headscratching or algorithims, but with Trip getting greasy and climbing into something. For me, that was much more reminiscent of TOS's Scotty.

Completely with you there! I loved how flawed everyone was--especially after I went back to watching 24th century Trek. ENT resonates better for me.

Enterprise was killed just as it started to develop. Most underrated: no. Biggest potential: yes.

I largely agree. I just went back and rewatched Enterprise not too long ago.

The First season was kind meh
The second season was starting to come together
The third season felt forced but worked
The forth season was nothing less then absolutely amazing (save the last episode).

I really want to have a series that has someone like Ken LaZebnik at the writing helm. What he did with Dr. Soung was beyond awesome.

Great. Absolutely agree that Ent got way less credit than it deserved. IMO, it was the most compelling of the spinoffs other than DS9.

Thanks for posting this, RAMA.

Enterprise was so underrated that it's almost sickening. So many people whined about how they were tampering with or contradicting the almighty canon but then JJ butthole Abrams comes along and blows up f-ing Vulcan. Enterprise was so good and it nearly killed me when they canceled it. I loved it when DS9 did the Dominion story arc and I think Enterprise did an even better job with the saga format (season 3). Although it was certainly different from the other series, it was done remarkably well. If it had been like Stargate Universe different, then I would have welcomed its demise, but they really created enough plot lines to make it an amazing show. By season 4, things were just starting to get warmed up. They finally properly introduced the Romulans, and they were starting to expand on the idea of creating a Federation of Planets. It was a freaking shame it got canceled and I think people are slowly starting to realize that we took an amazing thing for granted.

Although it still isn't my favorite of the ST series, I will say that the great episode:bad episode ratio was the best of the entire franchise. Aside from the series finale, I have no real complaints about Enterprise other than it getting canceled. I'm still pissed they killed of Trip...
