I'm sure part of the reason why Enterprise wasn't as popular as the other series is down to the theme song. I believe they decided on a rock ballad instead of the traditional instrumental theme tune to give it a retro feel - they certainly achieved that, circa 1980s.
ENT had far bigger issues than use a song for it's main title sequence. I don't dislike the song but that doesn't mean I love it either.
^ First time I actually watched that! It starts great, but starts to drag in the few bars before the "rock out" section. I have a feeling the music was actually slowed to fit the footage. But it does show it would have worked.
I liked it I felt that it suited the theme of the show. I have not ever gotten why they ramped it up for seasons 3+4.
I am amazed that after they started all of the massive shakeups (firing writers, serialized storyline, the hiring of Manny Coto) that the imitation Rod Stewart light rock song from Patch Adams was the one thing they would not give up on.

I read once that they were hearing the complaints of fans who didn't like the theme and that they wanted to up-tempo it a little. I guess that once you get into a series it's probably hard to abandon a theme song, so you more or less become married to it; for better or for worse.
It was probably fairly cheap to add drums to the theme too. I could probably do it in a day in my digital studio.
It was brutal. I don't understand why they went with it to begin with. I'm surprised that they decided to keep it after the negative audience reaction.
