Enterprise J at Quantum Warp

1 reason to set the story far away from the milkyway is for new ideas. I think trek TNG era was becoming stale. I dont see how another TV show could exist in the milkyway without it
repeating storylines and mistakes.

Wasn't that the reason given for sending Voyager to the Delta Quadrant?

And they were trying to say (in TNG's season 7) normal warp speed was bad for the fabric of space! With a backwash like that coming off a ship that size, who needs a Doomsday Machine?

Interesting idea. I came up with a similar-ish type of propulsion in Star Trek: Absolution, albeit not very stable just like failed transwarp drive.
Interesting idea, making your propulsion quirky. Like its a new technology? I guess that would make the hero crew pioneers, of a sort. :bolian:

It was a mechanism to transport the ship to a galaxy far far away. I dont think a TV show would work if the ship could travel to and from galaxies each week. It would just be the same but on a larger scale. The only advantage story wise would be a lack of bumpy forheaded aliens.

Yes. However the premise wasn't quite there for me. It was basically lost in Space. Towards the end of voyager we had the Borg and Klingons and Romulans. It may as well have been set in the Alpha quadrant.

Setting a new show in another galaxy with a whole different type of aliens would be quite different. Especially if there was no way to.return home.

It's sci-fi, they can stretch things a bit, like warp speed itself. Also, Voyager's species 8472 came from a liquid universe. Maybe a galaxy sized puddle isn't that much a stretch.

Then why fly to another galaxy when you can have all those convenient moist settings in your own back yard?

It serves no purpose. It's like taking NCIS and making NCIS LA. It's the same show just with different weather.

No. They aren't the same show.

NCIS and NCIS New Orleans, however... :rommie:

I recall, many many moons ago, a comic featuring a handful of astronauts, aboard a flying saucer. The craft had FTL, and had quirky side effects on space/time.

{snip}
I like the use of the scrunchy ball to portray the warp effect. Very cost effective and must have saved you hours of work.

It was rather simple. I started with star flares (typical warp acceleration) and cookie cut several dimensional lenses with squares at first, then thought better of it (things in space tend towards being round don't they).

Similar to this...

If trek ever came back to TV significant changes would be needed to keep the general interest. So why not have an intergalactic or interdimensional adventure?

There are roughly 300 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy. That should be more than enough for any TV series.

Agreed. But the ships fly at the speed of the script making the galaxy smaĺler in terms of travel. DS9 is meant to be on the frontier at the far edge of the alpha quadrant. Yet it only takes 1 week at warp 9 to reach earth. Its just too easy and tempting to send the ship back to earth every once in a while when it should be out there exploring space. At least in another galaxy theres no chance of that.

But if you can send the ships there in an acceptable amount of time, they can also be brought back in an acceptable amount of time. So it's the same rabbit hole.

Maybe in the next Galaxy the biped form with funny nose/forehead never took hold- trilateral symmetry with tentacles was the big thing- almost makes you want to go there just for that...

Of course the surgical alterations to blend the survey team in with the locals would be more interesting as well.
