Enterprise-D bridge question

Disillusioned

Commander
There were some horizontal panels along the sides of the bridge which were later replaced by stations in Generations. I believe during the show they portrayed these as some kind of computer access, but I think I saw Andrew Probert say he'd intended them to be something else. Does anyone know what that was? I can't remember now. :(

IIRC, they were intended as emergency equipment lockers. The portside one contained a minibar and the starboard one contained a rotating bed.

I always thought they were meant to be storage compartments.

In a few Trek games these were used for that purpose (of course they're not canon). One what a phaser locker and another held tricorders and communications equipment.

So do people think it would be better to have the equipment bays, or stations as in Generations?

It depends on what the stations are for. Who else really needs to be on the bridge? I never bought it that people HAD to run their scans from the bridge science station for research/experiments. That sort of work should be done in science labs.

"Storage compartments, storage compartments? The what, the what?"

I, personally, kinda prefer the stations from "Generations."

I wonder where the disco ball stowed...

Up above the ceiling, using the same technology for stowing the engine room blast door on the refit 1701.

I always thought that door hinged down. You know, like those old one-piece garage doors that used to kill people.

"Better" would vary by circumstance, but I have to say I thought the bridge looked fantastic on the big screen in "Generations."

Ditto. :techman:

Me, too! I thought for 7 years that the E-D Bridge would look spectacular if photographed in a widescreen format and it didn't disappoint. (even though Worf had to sit to fit into the frame)

The bridge was meant to be changed depending on mission, so no big deal. I do like the movie version because it takes up space. I always felt the bridge was a lot of wasted space.

Weren't they referred to as library computers or computer cores at some point early in TNG?

It is really interesting how big the TNG bridge looked on TV when it really was quite compact. The difference from the TOS bridge was only a couple of feet, but on TV it looked like you could play soccer there.

Yeah, I've thought that was weird too. I wonder if bay stations at the back, with the flanking door alcoves, combined with the "flat" side walls and largely open forward space create the optical illusion?
