enterprise compared to a 747

Back to the subject, and why a comparision between the Enterprise and a 747 is relevant, the 747-400 has a seating capacity of up to 524, i.e., the entire standard compliment of a Constitution class starship with room to spare.

I'm talking function, not passengers. I'm sure the Constitution could hold 6,000 passengers if they sat them side by side like an airliner.

while not very tall - here is a guy named stephen on the hull:

That's SOOOOO COOL!!!! Brilliant!:bolian::techman:

Also shows how pointless it was for JJ to make the ship as grotesquely huge as he did.
I wouldn't characterize it as "grotesquely huge," but yeah, I see no reason for the size increase.
Or for Probert to make the Enterprise-D as big as he did, right?
That's a different class, and a different time.:shifty:

I'd have preferred it had the 1701-D been slightly smaller than the 1701, owing to more efficient technology and a greater degree of automation. Indeed, my idea of a 24th Century ship of the line would have had more in common with the Intrepid class than the Galaxy.

The point of the comparison is that most people have seen a 747 in person. The size comparison with modern aircraft carriers work just fine for me, but I lived in Coronado while growing up and carriers were a daily sight (both Kitty Hawk and Constellation nearly daily, and the Enterprise from time to time).

Now if you are wanting a size comparison and crew comparison, maybe this will illustrate how spacious the TOS Enterprise was meant to be...

The original Enterprise was a very big ship.

But those who don't believe it aren't going to be convinced no matter what. :shifty:

Considering the mission profile of the Enterprise-D, and the fact that they were bringing their families along, they pretty much had to make the ship that big, just to give everyone enough room to move around and not drive themselves crazy.

The Intrepid class, on the other hand, is a lot closer in function and mission capability as the Constitution class, and so, comes out comparable in size.

That's just it--I always thought the mission profile of the D was silly and unworkable as originally conceived. Apparently, the creators felt the same, since it was quietly dropped early on in favor of something even less deep-space oriented than that of the original 1701. And the idea of families on board a ship that regularly faces destruction is so stupid as to be offensive.

My idea on why they put families is on is kind of hard to describe, but I'll try.
When the show was conceived it may have been quite a novel idea to set a new show even farther into the future than the show we already knew(TOS). The Probert sketches we'd see in Starlog gave me a sense of awe in the future ( I was 13 in 1987) and the idea of a grand ship with over 1000 people and twice the size of the original Enterprise with a mission of peaceful exploration with the Klingons as allies was exciting.

Once the show started it all became more 'real' and not a dream, if you know what I mean, and you had to tell rea; stories in this universe and after a while all the TRek shows follow the same path, just the ship and crew look different. I mean, no matter which Enterprise it may be even the NCC 1701 W with Mega Super Phase Blasters...it'l always be this close to losing sheilds and even if it can go UberWarp 55 it'll always have just that much trouble escaping some enemy.

This gets the idea across quite nicely.

no doubt it's a huge, comfortable ship. i can't understand why they later increased the size. but my imagination as a child made it much larger than it actually is. so when it's compared to 747 or or other familiar craft or a person - i'm surprised by how much smaller it is than i imagined. it's a very ship-shape ship, and the best IMHO.

i can look at it endlessly and imagine...

If it were the size of a Stardestroyer from Star Wars, then that would have been waaaay too big.

Let's hope JJ's not reading this. :borg:
JJ reading Star Trek fans' opinions? I think we're safe.

You clearly haven't seen any of his recent interviews where he explains that he has heard the criticisms by some Trek fans despite how well the movie was reviewed and that he plans to reflect upon those criticisms in the twelfth film. JJ is a bright guy he isn't so arrogant that he won't listen to what works and what doesn't.

There are a lot of people who would argue that the movie version was better, and I liked the level of detail shown in TMP and the films that followed it. Myself though I like the new alternate Enterprise from Star Trek (XI) it was detailed and busy which is what a ship is supposed to look like.

i understand. it's like falling in-love or having sex for the first time (which is a bit much for just bucket of bolts) when it comes to the TOS enterprise - nothing can compete with it; of course. but it's always nice for them to try. i hope it (and the ship) continues to evolve.

That's the same interview where he says that he thinks the brewery worked just fine as Engineering.

He may have heard us, but he ain't listening.

Depends on the headcount on "us" don't it? He can hear the complaints, but he's not gonna make changes based on every one he hears.

One of the benefits of having the bridge on top of the ship is that gives us a very immediate sense of scale.
