enterprise compared to a 747

It's smaller than I thought. Imagine going out to explore the edge of the galaxy in something that size...

yes, it is a lot smaller than i originally imagined too.

i should note that the image of the enterprise in dry dock was created by someone i don't know. i just added the plane on the hull.

On the contrary. Considering how huge an aircraft a 747 is, seeing how tiny one would be in comparison to the E increases my appreciation for just how gigantic the starship is.

Each to his own. I'd prefer to have something of a larger world around me...

I think the size of the original Enterprise is about right, slightly smaller then I would imagine, but still OK for me. TMP makes her look gigantic though.

If it were the size of a Stardestroyer from Star Wars, then that would have been waaaay too big.

I know what you mean...it is a matter of opinion after all and yes, I'd feel oddly safer in an even bigger ship than that. Apparently the Enterprise in the new movie is much bigger.

I also thought this thread might be about that one old Gold Key Trek comic that had a cut-away poster of the Enterprise and it apparently made it seem that the ship was almost the SAME size as a 747! Word is the producers of that comic didn't really have their facts sorted out.

I agree...12 hours in a 747 is one thing, 5 years is quite another.

That's way tinier than I would have believed, as well. No thank you to five years in there with what, 300-400 people? And a bunch of that space is taken up by equipment?

Those sonic showers better work REALLY well.

Galaxy-class for me, thanks.

I think that's what JJ was shooting for.

Of course, in his mad dash to copy Star Wars, he kinda missed the point of how, for the most part, the good guys were in the itty bitty ships and it was the bad guys who were clearly overcompensating for a certain deficiency.

Let's hope JJ's not reading this. :borg:
JJ reading Star Trek fans' opinions? I think we're safe.
Why should JJ worry about our opinion? He apparently had no prior consideration for the source materiel and as such wasn't then concerned about our opinion. I certainly couldn't give a shit about his opinion after seeing his film.

... not true.

While the film wasn't a wankfest for fans of concrete science fiction, it certainly told a very worthwhile story about Spock, dealing with the conflict between his human and Vulcan sides during a time when he also had the Vulcan equivalent of youthful impulse to deal with, and also Kirk, being brought up in very unfortunate circumstance never knowing his real father, and ending up semi-delinquent as a result.

The reason why Spock worked, was because we know the internal struggle that he often went through in the original series, which was now exacerbated by his mother's sudden passing at a time in his life that was already difficult. Ditto for Kirk... this once-model student with a mother/father upbringing was suddenly thrust into a childhood with one absent. Our familiarity with the already-established characters, for me anyway, made this new angle all the more interesting.

In other words, these aren't the characters we've known for the past forty-odd years, so why should we give a rip about these guys?

The reason why Spock worked...

In your opinion. I don't think this version of Spock worked at all.

It's one big, overblown, badly plotted Elseworlds story, which, unlike the standard variety of Elseworlds stories, the pinheads in charge intend to build the franchise around.

In other news, Playmates apparently has pulled the plug on their line of Star Trek toys, based upon the movie.

How much ya wanna bet sales weren't quite up to snuff?
