Anwar, if it was the difference between being enslaved by Klingons and either chancing a sun-sling shot time traveling maneuver or just waiting for the people who would have been the crew of Voyager to invent a time traveling device (we all know it'd end up being one of them) I think they'd go with the later. Dependable or not, available immediately or not, and regardless of who does or specifically when, The Federation would end up using time travel to prevent being wiped out by Klingons.

Another interesting AU story would've been what if the Feds were WINNING after 20 years and the Klingons were defeated in 6 months despite the Feds being way worse off due to the years of war. Would the Alpha Quadrant then still end up in the Space Dark Ages with the more ravaged and militant Federation turning on its other military neighbors (like the Romulans) later?

^Why would they turn on to the Romulans. They are more of a threat than the Klingons ever were. The Romulans would be very cautious and systematic in their fighting techniques.
Easy, they just came out a 20 year long war that killed 40 billion. They likely wouldn't simply tolerate the Romulans and other hostile races out there and would figure this was the best time to just get rid of ALL their enemies. Of course, such a massive war would turn the Alpha Quadrant into a dead quadrant eventually.

I agree with Anwar's assessment. I think the Klingons would have overextended their resources in their war against the Federation and other major powers such as the Romulans and Cardassians waiting in the wings would take advantage and interstellar war would break up resulting in an eventual collapse of civilization. Praxis probably didn't explode like it did in the regular timeline. I'm surprised that Starfleet never considered or planned an assault against any of the Empire's key military production facilties. Or perhaps they did and they failed. The Klingons probably have fortified Quonos along with their major key systems pretty well in this timeline though.
^We have to assume Praxis did explode, unless the Enterprise C went back to the events of TUC on the way back to the 2340s. There is nothing to indicate otherwise. Yesterday's Enterprise was written before TUC.

This constitutes an interesting proposition. Perhaps in the "Yesterday's Enterprise" time line instead of Gorkon attempting peace with the Federation he instead listens to General Chang and the militant faction of the Empire and decides to engage in warfare with the Federation to take the resources they needed to prolong their life spand. In which case such a feat would probably continue to dwindle their own resources allowing their enemies to take advantage. I don't think even with a decisive victory over the Federation would allow them any time to recuperate or load up for a battle against the Romulans. Unless the Romulans in that time line still continued their isolationist policies.
^Which would make the Enterprise C thing moot. Why would they go for their deaths after Gorkon's time. About fifty years passed between the events of the TUC and the incident that the Enterprise C was lost in.
Again, YE was written before TUC. As far as the YE writers knew, the Klingons had never suffered a major catastrophe like Praxis and the peace with the Federation was just due to diplomacy over the century and not because the Klingons couldn't afford it anymore.

Narenda III was never the cause of the war in "Yesterday's Enterprise" but a pivotal point in our time line in cementing the peace between the Empire and Federation due to the fact that the Enterprise C came to the aide of the Klingon colony against the Romulans. This was why it was so important for them to send the ship back. Since the Enterprise-C was not there at that time it was the catalyst for the creation of the alternate time line we saw in the episode. I got the impression that the Federation and Empire had been at war (if not a full blown conflict) for some time prior to this in the alternate timeline. This is also one of the reasons Guinan knew something was wrong...the timeline was never meant to exist in the first place.
You're right, as an El-Aurian Guinan was able to sense that there was a "proper way for time to be" (the Guardian of Forever said something similar) and that it had been disrupted.
The ENT-C crew were unaware of any hostilities with the Klingons and said that they were negotiating a peace treaty in their home time. Picard mentioned that the war had been on for 20 years.
My guess is that the diplomatic situation with the Klingons wasn't that good despite the negotiations, and that the ENT-C sacrifice is what turned it all around.

That is correct...I remember the dialogue from Picard now he adds after the twenty years of war with the Klingons something along the lines or maybe it is the actual line "A Federation starship coming to the aide of a Klingon outpost...might've averted the last twenty years of war against them". I've butchered the line. It does seem though that prior to The Undiscovered County that the Narenda III incident was meant to be a fulcrum in the relationship between the Klingons and Federation. "Yesterday's Enterprise" is like the case for most fans probably my third favorite episode after "Best of Both Worlds Parts One and Two". I can't remember though...does Picard mention what happens to the Enterprise-C in the alternate timeline? The only thing I can remember is at the beginning of the episode Tasha Yar reports that the Enterprise C was lost with all hands twenty years (can't recall if she mentions how).

Based on the abilities of the powers shown during Deep Space Nine (specifically the Dominion War) I'm not sure any of the three major powers (I never considered the Cardassians to be on par with the Romulans, Klingons, and Federation) had the necessary numbers to completely occupy one of the others, and certainly not both of the others.
The Federation, well, in their case its a moot point; they wouldn't do something like that.
The Klingons couldn't handle taking over a demoralized Cardassia in DS9. Sure, they bloodied their nose a bit, they hardly won during that conflict without opposition.
The Romulans forces were never made very clear... but one gets the impression they have small numbers of powerful ships rather than vast armies of smaller, less powerful ships.
So, really either way, I don't see a Klingon occupation of the Federation as something anybody was ever in any real danger of having happen; if somehow the Klingons marshaled the numbers necessary for it, the Federation would time travel to stop them (Maybe they'd send somebody from Kirk's Enterprise in a JJ Abrams film?)
