Season 5 was BtVS's best season, IMO. (Though seasons 6 and 2 are my personal favorites.) So, obviously, I disagree -the show did... whatever is the opposite of jumping the shark. What's the word when a great show gets even more awesome?

I've heard this described as "Riker's beard'.

And I agree, Dawn certainly didn't destroy the show. She might be not a popular character with some fans, but if such a thing would qualify for a show jumping the shark, TNG would have jumped the shark with its pilot.

Hmmm...As I recall, the entire episode's plot is propelled by Porthos leaving a small amount of Matter where it would cause a Diplomatic Incident

CSM from the episode 'Requiem', when he was shoved down the stairs by Krychek. Always viewed this scene as a jump the shark moment.
