Ralph Nader
Ralph Nader (pronounced /ˈneɪdər/; born February 27, 1934)[2][3] is an American attorney, author, lecturer, political activist, and four-time candidate for President of the United States, having run as a Green Party candidate in 1996 and 2000, and as an independent candidate in 2004 and 2008.
Areas of particular concern to Nader include consumer protection, humanitarianism, environmentalism, and democratic government.[4]
Nader came to prominence after publishing his book Unsafe At Any Speed, a critique of the safety record of the Chevrolet Corvair automobile. In 1999, an NYU panel of journalists ranked Unsafe At Any Speed 38th among the top 100 pieces of journalism of the 20th century.[5]
In 1990, Life magazine named Nader one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century.[6

Nanny of the Maroons - Jamaican Heroine

A young African Slave Girl who fought the British and helped protect the Maroons, in Jamaica.

Is it okay to have two historical heroes, if they're closely linked together? If so, I'd like to enter Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg.

Among other things, they co-founded the German anti-war group "Spartakusbund" during World War I. They were assassinated by the Freikorps (the German military back then) during the Spartacist Uprising in January 1919.

If only one historical figure is permitted, I'll go with Gandhi.

If they are linked together than it is fine. :) Although Gandhi might get more votes. :techman:

Florence Nightingale: pioneer of nursing, feminist literature, and statistical graphics; and lead singer of the soulful British rock band Florence and the Machine.

Yeah, well, he's more famous, obviously, but Karl & Rosa are closer to home. And that goes idiologically as well as geographically. So, I'll stick to Karl & Rosa and leave Gandhi for someone else.

I tried finding a fun picture of the shoe that was thrown at George W. Bush but I failed. :(

Anyways, I'd like to use Steve Irwin but since I know if he's "historical" (past, but not super past), then I'll use this:

- Harold the King. Only because it looks like the movie that's being made looks epic. The books were fantastic! And he's a heroic figure to some... I guess?

Iqbal Masih

For those unfamiliar, he was a child slave in Pakistan who, after freeing himself, became heavily involved in efforts to end child slavery. This included sneaking back into the factories, etc, to speak to the children labouring there and encouraging escape. He became a sort of "public face" for the anti-slavery organizations, giving speeches and campaigning openly in several countries. He said he had a dream of being "like Abraham Lincoln but for Pakistan". He was shot just shy of his thirteenth birthday, almost certainly an assassination.

He'll probably pale in comparison to the achievements of other heroes, but still...

John Muir (21 April 1838 – 24 December 1914) was a Scottish-born American naturalist, author, and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, have been read by millions. His activism helped to save the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is now one of the most important conservation organizations in the United States. -Wikipedia
