I'm Len - 42 - from NY.
I grew up watching TOS on WPIX in NY ("11 alive"). I have a vague recollection of perhaps seeing it in its original run on NBC - but perhaps that's just wishful thinking! Spent many a college night in the dorm during 1980-84 watching the late night showings with buddies and developing the Trek comaraderie - perhaps doing a little MSTing along the way. (My favorite memory of that was from Arena where a friend of mine suggested that the Gorn, when confronted with Kirk's "gun," should have pulled out an Uzi and said: "Well, the Metrons DID tell us there'd be weapons on the planet..." before blowing away Kirk! (well - it WAS funny at the time!
).
Loved TMP when it first came out. Went gaga over TWOK (which remains, IMHO, far and away the best Trek movie - nothing's really close). Liked TSFS and TVH. Don't think I've even seen TFF a 2nd time! But TUC was great.
Was psyched when TNG came out - and utterly thrilled when the 2nd season was much better than the 1st, and the 3rd blew away the 2nd, and...you get the point! Since the start of TNG, I have NEVER missed a single episode of a Trek show - ever. (the few times I missed it when it was broadcast, Iwas quickly able to get a tape and watch it!). It's hard - but I guess I'll admit that in many ways (he said, qualifying), TNG is better than TOS! I got to review the entire series again about 7 years ago when, after showing my wife (who grew up a TOS fan in a family of TOS fan, but who never got into TNG) some of my favorite eps that I had on tape, she was totally hooked and had us watch the entire series! Don't think we've ever got a "Great" TNG film - First Contact was the closest - but it had problems.
Big DS9 fan too. A show that really got better with time. I've actualy only seen the entire series once (perhaps I've seen a few eps a second time). I'd LOVE to rewatch the entire series (or at least my favorite 60 or so which I have on tape) - but, alas, my wife just didn't get into it. So I'm pinning my hopes on my 3 year old son (and my recent newborn son) to give me a chance to rewatch everything - eventually (I'm hoping he's ready within the next 2-3 years)! Any way, I enjoyed the darker Trek - and loved the use of extended storylines (nice that they learned the lesson from the excellent B5). I don't think the show as a whole though quite made it into my heart as much as TNG did - perhaps I just didn't like the characters as much (Picard blows away Sisko, in my book). Perhaps re-viewings will change my mind.
Thought Voyager was the weakest entry. Not that it wasn't worth watching, mind you! There are plenty of terrific Voyager eps - it's just that there are A LOT more mediocre eps than a Trek show should ever have! Plus, I thought Janeway's characterization was all over the board - as if the writers couldn't quite figure her out.
I didn't think things were getting much better with Enterprise - more mediocrity. Worth watching - but barely. UNTIL this past season - which I thought was several warp factors above the first 2 seasons. It's given me hope again that the show can be great.
Well, hope I didn't put too many to sleep on all that!
