Engines of Destiny-What happened to Scotty?

I'm at Chapter 10, and I'm wondering what happened to our lovable Chief Engineer?

Scotty was tough as nails when he needed to be; he would never be one to give up.

Star Trek V showed him in an uncharacteristically comic manner; the Relics TNG episode gave a somewhat realistic portrayal as a man out of his time (a time where he was considered a legend)...

However, Engines of Destiny makes our friend to be a self-pitying man who would risk the universe for one man: Jim Kirk.

(A review on Amazon.com brought up an interesting point as to why wouldn't he want to rescue Peter, his nephew? Or even, aside Peter, Mira Romaine?)

Scotty was close to the ship's engines, and/or a gal (usually an engineer) who caught his eye. There never was a sense that he and Kirk were that close...even though they've been through 'life and death' together. Even so, I would think Scotty would be a bit more 'thoughtful.'

The novel even has Scotty (in his self-pity) wallowing in alcohol.

What happened to Scotty?

You've made it as far as Chapter 10? Very well done. When I first read the thread title, I thought you were wondering why Scotty disappears for most of the book after arriving on the Enterprise (perhaps into one of the giant plot holes or into Kirk's gross mischaracterisation).

Kirk's Flying Wing,

Yeah, the book is a disappointment. (I may have to move on to another).

I like your avatar, btw....:techman:

Scotty did seem sorta crazy in Star Trek: Engines of Destiny. ...Gotta find Jim Kirk...will do anything for Jim Kirk.....Ignore the questions of Picard and crew who saved you...just fly the ship into the corona ...he is certifiably mad in this novel. A lot of things about this book seemed weird. " The way the Borg were explained ("Hive Mind" the "borg Link") , all the confusing plans everyone makes. running all around..all for it to end with a ...well I'm not going to ruin it. :scream:
It seemed like a book with a lot of potentinal. I remember Marco P. the editior saying Voyages of the Imagination the book was lost and he was so glad they found it. Maybe it got lost on purpose. I know thats mean...but its seemed all out of sync to me. Almost like it was unfinished. The description of how the Borg operate seem so pre-First Contact, like the author went out on a limb to decide how the Borg work, but now things established are different as to how these things are handled in the ST universe, but were never adapted at all in this novel. :borg:
Its got a neat cover, the TNG moniker isn't in title but seems like it shoule be..this book is still really expensive used for some reason...
I enjoyed Gene DeWeese's Star Trek: TNG-#2 The Peackeepers, and Star Trek: TNG #36- Into the Nebula. This was a different type of Star Trek story than those that didn't work for me...it was wierd fun at the time reading it, then when I reflect back on it...it doesn't make much sense and left me feeling confused.

It never really explained why the Borg even needed to travel back in time, if Picard remained in the nexus and wasn't part of the battle of Sector 001.

I remember looking forward to the novel, and loving the premise (I'm a sucker for stories dealing with time travel / alternate realities), but I was quite disappointed with the plot, characterization, dialogue and overall execution...

I tried to read the novel myself, but was also put off by the bad characterization.

I'm actually getting through 'Chain of Attack' by the same author [Gene DeWeese], and that story is a lot better.

I may post my reviews of both novels on Amazon soon.
