Empire's Star Trek Box Office Prediction

If I am not mistaken $115 million is more than any other trek movie has grossed right?

Depending how it is promoted will make or break the movie, BUT i would think that Paramount is likely to promote the hell out of it.

With successful promotion, a larger than usual curiousity factor, and a much larger than usual existing fanbase(which will likely include all types of Trek fans)in attendance during the opening week of the movie, i'd predict that the flick will easily take $150 million gross domestic, with another $100-115 made worldwide. If that happens, it will surely make Paramount happy enough to greenlight another Trek movie, but not THAT happy as to where they want another Trek tv show in development(which imo would be a very happy medium).

$115 million is only more than any Trek movie has grossed if price inflation over time is taken out of the equation. If the same number of people who went to see First Contact in 1996 were to pay 2008 prices for their tickets, the film would rake in $126 million at the US box office. Likewise, if the same number of people were to pay to see TMP as did back in 1979, but paid the equivalent of a 2008 ticket price, TMP would rake in the thick end of $300 million.

Well, it'll have to make at least US $150 million to be considered a success (and for us to get a sequel).

I'd rather see the advertising campaign kick into high gear before I made any predictions.

We good ol' Trekkers simply aren't accustomed to a movie on this scale. We might all be surprised.

Just caught a glimpse of UK magazine Empire's box office predictions for Star Trek. They're guessing the movie will take in $115 million in the US and $250 million worldwide.

Seems low to me...

Interesting.

It seems the Shatner era films were far more popular than the TNG films.

My guess would be in the $120 million range as the floor. $160 million as the ceiling.

My personal opinion is the film makes about $125-$130 million, but that could go up or down depending on what we know about the film as it gets closer + how the film is marketed + to whom it is marketed.

The first four Shatner films didn't have to compete with brand-new episodes of a TV show, so I'm sure that helped.

The numbers are slightly lower than I would predict but not far off. Don't forget that a lot of audiences will wait until the film is on cable or DVD to watch it, and in a lot of countries around the world, people will be watching bootleg versions of the film while it's still in the theater. Rabid Star Trek fans will line up to see it so long as it appeals to their tastes, but most of the rest of movie-goers will drift off to see something else. Also, it will likely play well in European markets, but a lot of the rest of the world may not find an American version of the future, where people like themselves are offscreen or in the background, to be terribly appealing.

If Star Trek performs below expectations (like failing to hit $100 million), let's dust off some of the excuses that were used for Serenity. You know, such as, "promotion was insufficient" or "the fanbase is too small" or "not enough big stars in it."

And then let's say, "Well, if it sells enough DVDs we'll get a sequel."

;)

Empire, I like their website and they do good coverage on movies but sometimes they just don't have a clue.

Some of their reviewers don't know anything, they think Pearl Harbor is one of the best movies ever, adore A.I, gave the Starwars prequel Attack of the Clone 10/10, they also think Naked Gun, King of New York, Enter the Dragon, Nikita and The Pianist are some of the worst films ever made.

Empire is more often a fanboy magazine for Matrix, Indiana Jones fans but they never gave out any real respect for the Star Trek Universe.

You've certainly made an excellent case for the flaws in Empire's reviews; but what about their ability to predict box office gross? Those are two different things...

What, are they going to spend 250 Million dollars on advertising? What the hell are you talking about?

I don't think it will even come close to making taht much.

I agree.

And the idiots in charge have already doomed it by giving it a budget of $US150m.

For it to start making back profit it needs to clear somewhere over $US400m.

Aint gonna happen.

Buh bye ST.

I don't know I hear their profit predictions are usually good, if I could make a generalization I would say Empire have a trend in loving financially successful, hyped movies but they don't really have a good trend in praising well directed movies.

They give 10/10 ratings to Chicken Run, Jerry Maguire, Starwars Attack of the Clones prequels and Titanic but they think King of NewYork and Three Colors Blue are some of the worst film made.

After receiving a number of complaints they have since tried to revise their ratings

Well, they get given a home but then they end up ripping up the floorboards in winter for the fire.

Whoa, seems like a global phenomenon. Some immigrants here in Europe are doing exactly the same thing each winter... after tearing half of the house apart for firewood, they'd ask the authorities for a replacement home, and after being refused, they'd start yelling something about racism. :rommie:

Well, okay. And mind you, I agree with your criticisms of their reviews. But if their financial predictions are considered sound, then surely they should be taken seriously as far as that goes?
