Given that an EMP blast would precipitate a full blown nuclear retaliation, my car not starting would not be my greatest concern. Thermonuclear war, with warheads targeted to harm ME rather than my stuff, would be.
I keep reading this, but no source is ever given. The US military has used solid state electronics in all of its equipment for decades, so...I'm going to toss this in with "myth" more than fact. Nevermind that no modern piece of electronics has been exposed to a wideband nuclear EMP.
Telegraph systems are very robust compared to the electronics in use today.
