Editorial cartoonist not fan of New Trek

Clearly, that one went right over your head.

That's what I was thinking.

It's criticizing Star Trek fans who simultaneously and shamelessly go to the represented extremes in both adulation and vitriol. He's saying that those of us who do that are fanatics, basically.

nitpicking a bit but Nimoy was Jewish and from what I know/remember, they wouldn't casually write 'God', even less on a site and for a vignette.

I actually read it as Abrams being Judas because of that "Force" thingy.

Those "Editorial Cartoons" in The Onion are as much parodies of editorial cartoons just as the bulk of The Onion is about parodying news stories. So, yes, it's making fun of the Trekkies, not actually about Nimoy and Abrams.

In a discussion of The Onion's take on trekkies, this is always appropriate:

Without Abrams take on Trek the series would be dead and buried...Some people simply don't understand how irrelevant Star Trek had become before ST 09 revived it.

If Abrams version of Star Trek met with Leonard Nimoy's approval (not to mention the general public who made the series commercially viable for the first time in 15 years) it's ok with me.

Beat me to it. The Onion's editorial cartoons are always themselves some sort sort of extreme (when regarding politics, usually hyperbolically extreme right-wing) in order to spoof extremes in actual editorial cartoons.

Well that could annoy some folks.

But at least they didn't depict Mohammed in that cartoon, just God and the Devil.

This is just another clue that the cartoon depicts, in Sutton's (a.k.a. Kelly's) opinion, what a certain swath of Trekkies are thinking, rather than depicting Nimoy and Abrams themselves.
