Edgar Ramirez may be the new del Toro in Star Trek (1)2

I don't think Benico Del Toro is any great box office draw. In fact I can't think of one film he starred in (as top bill) that could be considered a box office smash

I watched Carlos on netflix and Ramierez might be the one. He has an intensity, at least in that film. Needs some special cough cough,, vitamins and a high protein diet and I think he could pull it off

But at least it'd be better to get a minor actor who looks somewhat like him rather than a star who doesn't in the least.

As they should, they'll go with whichever actor performs the best in the screen test and also is willing to commit to the contract and the negotiated salary. Appearance is a very minor part of it.

Who'd have ever though Simon Pegg would look like Mr Scott, but both James Doohan and Simon Pegg are Scotty to me now.

I have a feeling that Del Toro turned the role down because it was not a "starring" guest star role.

I imagine Spock Prime will be a bigger role than the one Del Toro turned down.

there is no spock prime. None of the original actors are returning

I think if they can get a high profile actor to play Khan then so be it, but by now they would have already done so. The film goes into production in a few weeks' time.
These issues would have to have already been dealt with by now.

They can still bring someone in even after they start filming. But I think they'll get a name actor before filming begins. I think that they still have a couple of weeks left before they start filming.

I think having a higher profile actor as a villain would give the film wider appeal. The main cast don't yet have the pulling appeal a long term big name star would.

The first film did just fine at the box office, and the closest thing it had to a high profile actor was Eric Bana. I'd rather they pick someone audiences are less familiar with, who can be excellent (like Ramirez, who is supposed to be terrific in Carlos), than a name who might be less interesting.
Yeah, Star Trek starring Eric Bana. "Hey, I know him". Not a big profile but bigger than the rest of the cast put together. They were looking for a well known actor for the role which is why Russel Crowe's name was mentioned at the time. The previous film also had Leonard Nimoy in it. I'm not saying the success of the movie hinged on those two actors but it's a publicity weight that the rest of the cast didn't have.
I think for such a high profile movie as this you need to have a name in it that people know well. It's that extra something that gives a flavor to the movie.

My vote is for:

Javier Bardem
Antonio Banderas
Edgar Ramirez
Wilmar Valderama
Erik Estrada

Yes, these actors could quite possibly be in the running to be portraying either a Borg, Romulan, Klingon, Breen, or Ferengi villain and are in no shape or form remotely trying to re-emulate what Ricardo Montalban did a long time ago...

So now they went and hired some pasty Brit to play "a lead role" which can only be a villain role by process of deduction, so does that mean the villain is someone who could have been played just as easily by a Latino? That rules out Khan (pasty dude can't play him) and probably someone like Lord Garth (can't see him as Latino). The only role that covers both bases is...a KLINGON!

you're absolutely right, but skin colour aside, if we just talk about the body types...I doubt Cumberbatch is taking over a role that delToro was supposed to play.
Unless, of course, we are talking about...a THOLIAN!
