Edgar Ramirez may be the new del Toro in Star Trek (1)2

Just about every Trek movie and TNG movie since TWOK has been trying to create a villain as good as Khan.

Now, since they finally have a chance to use the "real" Khan, of course they're going to do it.

We probably shouldn't be surprised.

But if this is all true, I don't like the bullshit we've been fed by the producers, especially Abrams, who led us to believe that Khan wasn't in the mix. I also wouldn't be surprised if this was a top-down studio decision, to maximize hype about the movie. OMG Khan is back! Whoooooo!

What a lazy sequel idea if they ARE actually having Khan as the villain.

I really don't think it's lazy at all. They are taking on quite a challenge because their version of Khan would have to live up to fan expectations, and would have to tell a pretty radically different story.

Look at how split reaction is. They're going to have to work hard to get some people to accept it.

I agree with Admiral M, it's lazy. I think I am beginning to feel like the STXI dismissers must have felt - sold out.

Please, God, let all this Khan talk only be rumor, in the end. :scream:

You're having far too much fun with this.

Oh, this is going to be so-o-o much better than "why isn't Abrams letting William Shatner appear as old Kirk?"

Oh dear!

I think having a higher profile actor as a villain would give the film wider appeal. The main cast don't yet have the pulling appeal a long term big name star would.

I certainly hope that none of us are assuming that because the "villain" is played by a Hispanic actor the villain is automatically going to be Khan (originally played by a Hispanic actor).

The first film did just fine at the box office, and the closest thing it had to a high profile actor was Eric Bana. I'd rather they pick someone audiences are less familiar with, who can be excellent (like Ramirez, who is supposed to be terrific in Carlos), than a name who might be less interesting.

^ I agree. No-one really went to see the last movie because of Eric Bana. And people who just Will Not Go To See A Star Trek Movie won't go to it just because Tom Cruise or Will Smith or whoever is playing a supporting role. Just get the right actor for the role, regardless of star power.

Yep. If they're testing a bunch of not-particularly-famous actors, then there should be no reason they couldn't also test actors who look more authentically Indian or perhaps even are.

Benicio Del Toro might have been a butts-in-seats kind of name, but these other guys aren't. That throws it open to a huge range of actors.

Eric Bana was a big enough name that I'm sure he helped sell the movie to some non-Trekkie types. But if that isn't an issue this time around and they feel secure that they've got enough PR value in the revitalized Star Trek brand now, then they should give the role to someone like Naveen Andrews, who looks Indian (because he is) and could bring a whole new level to the character that doesn't have a whiff of campiness.
