Eddington's vitriolic assessment of The Federation

I'd see Mirror Eddington as a Kirk type. Bright, promoted fast, almost fanatically loyal to the Federation...

And allergic to tomatoes...
That would suck as he would probably be allergic to several other plants too in the Nightshade family.
Tomato, Tomatillo, Naranjilla, Eggplant, Potato, Pepper (includes hot and sweet varieties as well as spices like paprika, chili powder, cayenne, and Tabasco) Pimentom Goji berry (wolfberrym) Tamarillom Cape gooseberry/ground cherrym Pepinom Garden huckleberry.

Do replicated ones count?

Not necessarily. My mom is allergic to tomatoes, but none of the other things you have mentioned she has ever had a problem with. (Not to my knowledge, anyway.)

Fascinating. I have several friends with severe nightshade allergies, as in even skin contact with potatoes, peppers or tomatoes will cause significant problems.

Skin contact isn't the issue with my mom. It's eating tomatoes and tomato based sauces. It might be due to the high acidity, but for certain it's tomatoes.

No kidding. When I worked for Whole Foods, I encountered people with types of allergies that I didn't know existed. And a vast majority are things that you never heard about growing up.

It's like humans have gotten generally weaker.

I wonder if the replicator is trained to produce allergen-free varieties of everything.

Either that or people with those allergies used to die young because of frequent exposure to them.

It would be interesting to see a space organization equivalent to the UFP in the mirror universe.

I don’t think you’re supposed to take Eddington’s criticisms at face value. He’s clearly a very biased source that is speaking out of personal grievance.

Does the federation expand and “assimilate”, yes. Is it the Borg? No. Well it doesn’t “assimilate” it incorporates other civilizations. The difference is the federation doesn’t inject you with nano probes and force you to join.

Well, there is a somewhat grey area. I'd say the Federation has a lot of soft power and I could imagine many worlds to be under pressure partially because of that and partially because of the alternative- choosing to be part of a powerful alliance or to be on its fringe on your own, with other not-so-friendly empires around, with whom you'll have to negotiate from a much weaker isolated position. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that in our world, that's the reason many European countries joined the EU. Were they forced? No. Were they under some form of pressure to join? Perhaps.

I think where Eddington is correct is the Federation wants everyone to join. That yes, it would be a great triumph if the Cardassians applied for membership. Same with the Klingons and Romulans.

Is that a bad thing per se? Well no, but his criticism is the Federation is more willing to accommodate its enemies with the ideal of eventually winning them over then it is in protecting its own citizens(or caring about its former citizens).

Well, the other side of Eddington's comment is that no one ever leaves as well. Which is more interesting, and goes in line with Garak and Quark's discussion around root beer, that you start to like it.

Now, do I agree with Eddington? No. But, I think he calls out something that is kind of unconscious at that point in Federation history. You join but you never leave.
