Eddie Murphy to Host 84th Academy Awards

Actually "Tower Heist" has the potential to boost his career but this does as well too. This got done really fast. It was first reported on the weekend I think that the Rat had only submitted his name as a potential candidate (Brett Ratner is also directing Tower Heist).

Eddie Murphy?

Really?!

First of all, at his best, his style of comedy is hardly ideal for a Prime Time Sunday Night Network TV audience.

Second of all he hasn't made a meaningful movie in years.

I will quibble, however, the movie he has coming out this winter with Ben Stiller looks good with Eddie Murphy back to his old form but that remains to be seen.

Nor do I think Eddie Murphy is going to be that much of draw, or appealing, to the types of audiences networks aim for these days.

It's an odd choice to say the least.

^ Had Billy Crystal done anything meaningful when he started hosting? I can't remember what year he started, or what he did & when.

As far as I'm concerned, Eddie Murphy from Delirious or Raw is what I'd like to see. They'd talk about that longer than any wardrobe malfunction or lesbian kiss.

Billy Crystal, however, had a bit more of a reputation as a song-and-dance/showman. He may not have had a movie that'd came out recently that was worth knowing about but his reputation as an effective MC preceded him. Eddie Murphy, however, can't quite make those same claims to fame.

That's just it. We're not going to get the Eddie Murphy from Raw or from Beverly Hills Cop. We're going to get the Eddie Murphy who did Norbit and the Nutty Professor who's been sterilized and cleaned up for a Prime Time Sunday TV audience. We won't even get the potentially good Eddie Murphy that looks to be in "Tower Heist." I feat that any ground he may gain there may be negated some-what by Doing the Academy Awards.

It's not a venue suited for his comedy style. Going back to Billy Crystal, his comedy style that makes him popular is "clean enough" to work in Primetime Sunday.

I'm not trying to say Eddie Murphy's stint at the Academy Awards won't work just that it has a lot going against it. I don't see how Eddie can be funny in this type of venue.

I could be proven wrong, however.

I do think he looks like he's going to be great in "Tower Heist" though. When I saw that trailer I was like, "What?! Did Brett Ratner travel back in time to 1990 and get the GOOD Eddie Murphy?!"

As much as you can hate on Ratner for X-Men First Class, that project had a lot of weight with it he couldn't handle. This type of movie looks like something he can pull off. (See: Rush Hour.)

Again you guys can thank Oscar director Brett Ratner for the choice. He directed Murphy in the upcoming comedy heist movie "Tower Heist" and obviously liked his stuff enough to submit his name to host the show.

If he returned to his 80s style (Raw, Delirious) it could become legendary TV for the 5 minutes it airs (and they pull someone from the audience to take over):lol:

Other than that i can't see this working.. the Oscars are too PC and mainstream to really go nuts (small digs and small raunchy comments aside) and this doesn't suit his style.. neutered Eddie Murphy is uninteresting.

LOL, you do like to complain a lot in advance, don't you? ;)

He was good on SNL and that was network television. I don't know why you guys think he needs to go all Raw or Delirious to be funny.

Eddie Murphy has done plenty of stuff that is funny without being obscene, and it's not like you have to be a stand-up to host the Oscars anyway. He's an actor first, stand-up second these days.

It's not like Murphy is following a huge success act from last year. Poor Anne Hathaway having to basically carry the show last year because her partner was supposedly stoned and didn't give a shit. Muprhy is an upgrade in my opinion.

He first hosted the Oscars in 1990, the year after he and Meg Ryan had a huge hit with When Harry Met Sally...

He hosted again in '91, '92, and '93; he made City Slickers in '91, and '92 was when Jack Palance won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Curly.

This. After last year's fiasco, Ratner could dig up Bob Hope's withered corpse and it would put on a better show than James Franco.

Last year was a disaster all around, someone somewhere decided the show needed to appeal to teenagers so got two "teen friendly" sorts to host, and well we all saw what happened. JF looked like he wanted to die of embarrassment. The Oscars are not a kids show, they have the MTV movie awards to squeal and scream at.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Eddie Murphy brings to the stage

Anne was very capable of hosting by herself, it is just that the show was designed for both her and Franco not just her and it turned out badly. They should have just got Hathaway to host. I suspect that they asked her in the first place due to her excellent and funny routine with Hugh Jackman from the year before.

As much as people want Eddie to be raw. He's just going to be tame. We don't want a Ricky Gervais situation.

He's in a room full of powerful people. One bad joke and he's out.

Break out the red leather suit!

As much as you can hate on Ratner for X-Men First Class,

X-men 3. Don't sully "First Class" name with Ratner ;)
