“We’re ready to go,” he told the site. “We’re just waiting for the right opportunity. We want to be successful with it. The studio wants to be successful, and we really don’t want to proceed with something in the wrong climate, which I think financially it is right now.”

“We were very successful with the first two SG-1 movies,” Cooper added. “Since then, the economics have changed a little bit. DVDs aren’t selling the same way they were when we released those even just a year, and a year and a half ago.”

Meanwhile, the Atlantis set is still standing (and costing MGM rent) — a good sign that the studio plans to film the movie, eventually. The S.G.C. set was recently converted for use in the Stargate Universe premiere, and there are rumors that the real-world closing of Cheyenne Mountain may result in a relocation of the SG-1’s home base in a future film.

Wright said in April that the SG-1 movie had received a green light from the studio and would almost certainly film before the year is out (story). Whether MGM is still planning that schedule remains to be seen. The script is complete, penned by Wright and Carl Binder.

The Atlantis movie script has also been written, by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, and is still waiting for the go-ahead. Its working title is Stargate: Extinction.

Cooper said that the Atlantis film takes place shortly after the end of the final episode of the television series, while the SG-1 movie (which will feature Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O’Neill) takes place sometime in the period between Continuum and the start of Stargate Universe.

I'd say leaving the Atlantis sets up is a good sign for the Atlantis movie.

Shame about Cheyenne Mountain - but I guess something can always be built to mimic it for future films or something.

It's good that they are still planning on making these movies, even if they are forced to wait a bit longer for a more optimum time; I'm really looking forward to them. I've always liked Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, and was very saddened when they were both cancelled prematurely.

MGM you could of had a 6th season done and aired instead of having sets doing nothing making no money for you and then made DVD movies. I guess filming won't begin for either DVD movies till 2010 for a christmas release that year too.

Actually MGM canceled the show, they wanted Universe more than Atlantis.

But why not just film the movie now and sick on it? That way they can put the Atlantis sets in storage. Film it now and release it next year, didn't they do that with the other SG-1 movies anyways?

I think it would be great if they did a movie where the Stargate had to be moved because the mountain is closing.

And maybe reveal the friggen gate to the public in the process.

I'm starting to think maybe a trilogy or mini-series would be the best way to handle the gate being revealed to the public, I want to see this happen at some point.

Nope because that would change the status quo and the writers don't want that.

The old excuse used to be if they did the reveal on SG-1 then it would be before/after and the show would deal too much with the after and no longer about the blah blah blah....

However the show is long canceled, just reveal the damn thing already in a true miniseries and call it a day.

The reason they haven't revealed the gate, is because I think the want to be able to maintain a "real world" feeling to what is going on outside of the stargate program. Thing is a show like "True Blood" has shown that you can turn the world upside down but still maintain a present day feeling to a show.

^ That was an valid argument until they showed the president and it wasn't Bush. It's not in our universe, it's not in our "real world".

I'd buy the SG-1 movie. So hurry up and start filming already.

I agree but I still think there trying to stay pretty close to our universe. I also think, showing the president, was them going agaisnt there own rules. There is a reason why we never found out who the president was in the early seasons. I think we were supose to asume it was Clinton and then Bush.

I liked the fact that we never saw the President, they made it work well, it made the series so much more believable.

Now they've shown this joke of a president who in essence mirrors the ridiculous parody the series has become and adds nothing to the series apart from a couple of scenes. Rubbish.

Yeah the president was way too much like late season Jack, which is why now after 15 years the Stargate should come out. It's actually ridiculous to believe after all this time and all these countries knowing that it hasn't come out.

The only reason it hasn't is because the writers don't have a clue how to write it that it isn't just "Everyone is fine with it". They love their Earth based stories, and the Stargate coming out would be the perfect way to save money. :)

SG-1 drifted away from "real world" politics from as early as season 5, when Ronny Cox's character (whose name escapes me at the moment) talked about how he was going to run for president.

Anyway, I wouldn't call Hayes a joke of a president (we have plenty of real world examples of that), but rather an idealized president, someone who showcases the best sides of both political parties. Note that we were never told the political party of Hayes. Another example of an idealized president is Harrison Ford in Air Force One.

Oh, SG-1 followed a long, long, long tradition of showing the U.S. President and having it be a fictional character instead of the serving RL President - that has nothing at all to do with whether it takes place in "the real world" or not.

And what's the diff with Cheyenne Mountain closing - did they ever use the location for anything but establishing shots?

That long tradition of fictional Presidents was not one the show took part in until a new President was shown in office in the final three episodes of season seven. That's why the President(s) beforehand were always off screen, and why General Michael Ryan played himself in season four. Cheyenne Mountain was even a real facility inside of a mountain and closed off to visitors! The writers openly lauded themselves for producing a series that could be taking place in the present day several times in the early years, on audio commentaries and in interviews.

But the series definitely got away from that idea as it went along, introducing a fictional president (who took office in the spring of 2004 :wtf:) and having massive alien spacecraft (and our own massive spacecraft, that were somehow built on Earth entirely in secret) enter orbit over and over again but eluded discovery from numerous observatories on Earth. Hell, by the ninth season, a whole building in Seattle (well, they called Vancouver Seattle, anyway) was transported into space in front of hundreds of spectators and nobody was the wiser!

And yet, what is the number one reason repeated again and again in (recent) interviews as to why the series won't reveal the Stargate publicly? But of course--because the series takes place in the 'real world.'

Yeah. Okay. Whatever.

Just because the episode aired in Spring 2004 doesn't mean that's when it took place.

The series had always taken place in relative real time before (Why else is the episode called '2001,' besides as another callback to Clarke?). The episode aired a whole year before the next Presidential term. It was just weird.
