eBook Formats and Readers ?'s

I've read my first Star Trek ebook on my shiny new iPad a few days ago, Star Trek: The Five Enterprises, by Kenneth Lowenberg, which was a fan fiction story and not an actual book. But enjoyable.

There is a new firmware for the Kobo reader that fixes a lot of the bugs.

I'm waiting for that, but unfortunately my new Kobo is already broken :( screen won't work anymore. Waiting on Kobo to send me the prefilled return box.

The good is odds are I'll get a replacement that already has the new firmware

What does the broken screen look like? Is it actually a broken screen or is the unit just not functioning properly otherwise?

The screen flickers a bit, the blue light at the top comes on but that's all. The left side seems to flicker a little longer than the right but there are not cracks or anything. I have no idea what's wrong with it. I just wish they'd repair/replace it already

Can you post a photo of your Kobo so we can see if we can tell what might be wrong with it?

Thank you for the offer but its all taken care of. Once I got in touch with the right people I managed to it replaced right away. So now I have a new one, with the firmware already updated, and this one is black! Not that the white bothered me at all, its cool either way.

Once I'm done the pbook (that's printed) I'm on I'll be going back to Vanguard. Just have to figure out where I left off. It wasn't very far in

Oh and I notice in the software that comes with it there's going to be an official Kobo newspaper system out soon

Just saw that the Amazon Kindle (a new wifi only version) is out and available for $139. I wonder if Barnes and Noble will drop theirs to compete.

The new Kindle looks pretty nice and I think this is a reasonable price. I might have to finally pull the trigger on one of these ebook readers. Now hopefully everybody can get their formatting in order...

To be honest, I'd wait and see what Sony & B&N do later this year. Because once you pull that trigger, you could find yourself wishing you waiting. The K3 will still be around if you don't like any new offerings from the others.

I would imagine that a nook 2 will be in the offering at some point down the road but I doubt that they will drop the price of the current nook any lower. Ten dollars is not that substantial of a difference and there will be people who shop around that will buy a nook because it offers what they need (more flexibility across platforms and sellers) and others who are just interested in the latest best sellers and are already Amazon customers. The nook will never sell as many units as the Kindle and that's just a plain fact. That doesn't mean the Kindle is a superior device though because I personally believe it is not (even with it's few little upgrades).

As for Sony they have already stated that they are not going to play the price war game and I expect they will likely bow out of the ereader market soon or they will have to re-invent it.

It's not going to matter how long you wait, there's always going to be something better around the corner. If there's one constant of electronic devices it's that they get better and cheaper.

If you think something is worth the money now and you feel you'll get use out of it, get it and enjoy it.

This is a case of waiting to see what Sony & B&N do next. But if by November, nothing has been announced or released, then I would go with something that is out now.

I wanted to have a device for summer vacation, so it made sense for me to pull the pin and go Kobo. Here in Canada we don't have B+N, so no Nook (offically), so it was Kobo/Sony/Kindle. For me the Kobo won hands down.

Really happy with it now.

Oh on another note, you know how when you buy a Blue Ray nowadays you get the regular DVD and the digital edition as well? Anyone know of any book sellers that include ebooks copies with their printed ones? That would be fantastic

Any love for the Sony eReader? I recently purchased the Sony PRS 900 reader and I'm *really* enjoying it! Never thought I'd start to prefer a handheld electronic reading device to a paperback book, but I am.

I like my Sony Reader. The 900 is a nice one. But I can't currently justify the price. And besides, given the rumors that Sony bought some Pearl screens (new eink screens), I'm waiting till later this year t see what Sony does with new models. I don't want a K3. Too many downsides to it that cannot be overcome.

My opinion is that given the delays of the K3, I would wait until October and see if Sony comes out with something new by then and maybe by then B&N will have something new to announce as well. Then make the choice of what reader it is you want. But don't base it just on price. Sony have metalic bodies for one where Amazon is plastic. Sony handles epUb where Amazon does not. So check out the different features and see what you feel is a good fit.

This is a publisher thing. Most of them are still intimidated by the concept of ebooks. Both Amazon and B&N have made inroads with certain publishers but unless you see at least a dozen or so sign up there probably wont be anything like that for a while.

Another vote for Kindle. One nice thing about the Kindle is that when you buy a book, it works on ALL Kindle supported devices, and Whispernet updates them ALL automatically. So, say you are reading a book on your Kindle, than leave for work. At lunch you can pull out a phone that supports the Kindle app (andoid phones and iphones) and continue reading there. Whispernet saves the spot you left off on your Kindle and resumes from that same spot on your phone. Or if you have a netbook, UMPC, laptop, desktop, whatever, there's a Kindle app for that too for both Windows and Mac OS (unfortunately, no Linux support yet.)

Oh, and the Kindle 3 screen is beautiful, can't wait for mine to come in. And the Amazon store has tons of Trek books to choose from.
