Ebert and Roeper to Leave "At the Movies"

Looks like Disney's desire to tinker with the classic format has driven away the two main guys.

But it also looks like Roeper might continue the basic two-critic format in a "new" show. I hope so. If At the Movies becomes all flash and no substance like Access Hollywood and similar ilk, I'd be happy to follow Roeper (such as he is) to another show if it retains the Siskel/Ebert feel and format started in 1975 on Sneak Previews.

(Ebert continued to work on the show behind the scenes, even though his surgeries kept him from appearing on camera.)

Yeah, I think that's what Disney wants now. The shows get flashier and the reviews get shorter.

I don't know if you can really do a "Siskel & Ebert" type show anymore. Remember, they started out on PBS and pretty much were in control of what films they discussed and what they said.

I don't know how many networks would allow that any longer.

Well, I'm hoping they can find a less corporate syndicator who's content to just use the reputations of those involved to carry the show.

We'll see, I guess.

I would love to see a bunch of online videos of what people think the Disney version might look like. Could be VERY funny ...

At the Movies with Jeff Craig and Pete Hammond

It'll be the ultimate quote whore, catch phrase, quick soundbite, all style, no substance review show ever!

That's too bad. I know everyone rips on Roeper, but I thought he and Phillips made a really good team.

I'm not a fan of Roeper, and Ebert hasn't been able to do the show since his surgery, so I'm glad to see the show rest in peace. Ebert was always lesser than Gene Siskel as a critic, too. I've found he has more to offer in his DVD commentaries primarily as a film historian. I hope he regains his voice and can do more of them.

No. I. Am. Right. You. Are. Wrong.

Poser. You. Are. Just. As. Wrong. As. You. Were. On. "North".

I'm not seeing that exactly. :wtf:

I read not too long ago that Ebert may never regain the ability to speak--and that after numerous (and often life-threatening) surgeries, he's not keen on going under the knife again. But he continues to write, which was always his passion anyway, and run his yearly film festival. I thought his whole attitude was great.

Maybe he can produce his own version, since he patented his "thumbs up/down" movie review? Or maybe they can go to a cable station instead of syndicated.

The reviews are about as short as they could be now, and still convey any relevant information. I doubt whatever Disney has planned would even be useful in separating wheat from chaff. As it is, I just consider "At the Movies" a skim-along-the-top type of movie review format.

Ooooh! Can Ebert get a whole Stephen Hawking voice thing?

That would be awesome! :techman:

Actually, he is using one of those voice things now. I saw him on some show a few months ago where he was using one and it had a british accent. He said that he chose the one with the british accent because it was less robotic sounding.

Mine sounds like Keanu Reeves and Milo Ventimiglia because I wanted it to sound more robotic. :)
